Section A: Emergent Mathematics
Activity 1
Play 1: Creative play
In my first week of practical in a grade R class, my teacher Mentor used Creative play.
The mentor let the children paint the different seasons of the year on A3 paper, she
divided the paper into four halves and the children painted their hands with the color
each season represents. She used their hands as the leaves of each tree. My mentor
collected small flowers, wool, dead leaves and yellow buttons. My mentor let the
children use the flowers on the spring tree, the yellow buttons for the sun for summer,
the wool for rain drops and the dead leaves for autumn. This allows the children to think
creatively by using different materials or objects to build or form a specific pattern.
Play 2: Fantasy play
In the grade R classes the teachers have different free play sections in the class. This
allows them to widen their imagination and learn some basic mathematics skills
throughout free play. The children have a Lego section, where they can build different
objects which makes them count how many blocks they need for certain objects. The
children also sort out the different colors from each other. One of the other free play
sections is a Mini Shop where the children can buy things from one another by using
fake money. This teaches the children that you need to give money to be able to buy
things. Free play for smaller children such as grade R students is a very important
aspect because they learn faster by playing, watching videos etc. If something interests
a child, they will immediately pay attention to it and will learn very fast in their own way.
Play 3: Word play
My mentor taught the children a frog counting song. This made counting more fun and
exciting for the young ones. While they sing the song the children jump on every
number they sing just until 10 and then they just count on till 60-80. A rhyme or song will
make learning in every subject much easier for younger children, because it is more fun
and excites the children. This song helped the teacher to teach the children to count till
80 much faster than just counting on a count mat.
