The education system witnessed numerous reforms during the years 1949-76, which
changed the lives of Chinese people to a significant extent.
In the beginning of the time period, 80% of Chinese
citizens were illiterate; only 30% of males over 7 and 1% of females could read a simple
letter
Between 1949-57, primary schools had increased from 26-64 million and between 1952,
42 million peasants attended winter schools
