The functions as an institution: 1. Regulation of sexual activity 2. Social Placement 3. Material and emotional security 4. Socialization *Difference between other institutions:* it has the ability to fulfill a number of functions of other institutions. How has family structure changed over the past 40 years (i.e. what types of households are more common)? Why have these changes occurred? 1. Marriage primarily for love and affection 2. One parent households has increased. *Why has this changed?* 1. Changes in need to stay home: Less necessary to stay at home due to fertility decreasing and industrialization 2. Changes in behavior: Divorce rates, increase in single person households 3. Changes in gender expression: Age at marriage increases, rise of dual-earner households, women work continue to work outside of home) How do families contribute to social (i.e. race/ethnicity & gender) and economic forms of inequality? Families pass on economic capital like property and inheritance. (Patriarchy) marriage has treated women as sexual/economic property. Pass on social and cultural capital like education opportunities, networks and contacts, socialization and interests (Lareau). How is housework gendered? What types of housework are women more likely to do, and what proportion of housework do married women do? Women do more cleaning/cooking/laundry. Men do more outdoor work/repairs/etc. Married women in the U.S. do about 70% of the housework. What is the median age at first marriage for men and women? How has this changed over time? Men: 28.2 Women: 26.1 Overtime, men and women are waiting longer to get married. How has the divorce rate changed since 1980? Why have the number of divorces gone up in the United States since the 1960s? Divorce rate has been increasing. *Reasons:* 1. No fault divorces 2. More socially acceptable 3. Rising Individualism 4. Marriage to love 5. Stress Why are men and women increasingly waiting to get married? What effect does cohabitation have on marital success?
