This document is an 80-page document I submitted for my real EPQ, assessed and marked for the 2024 examinations. It contains modifications made to my essay structure and plan, research I did for my essay with links, the final essay and references, and a script for my presentation that I roughly fol...
1. Abstract - 200 words
Not necessarily important, however, when scientific research is usually conducted, an
abstract is included because the information can be quite content-heavy and
unconcise – this could also be useful for my presentation and for my general essay
structure.
2. Introduction - 700 words
Important as it will outline the objectives and aims of my essay, what this essay will
collectively explore, why I chose this topic and specifically the “Homo” genus to focus
on, and how this area of research is important in the modern world. This is the
maximum word count, but it would preferably be more concise. A brief synopsis could
be added about evolution and taxonomy, or footnotes could be added alternatively to
explain.
The choice behind researching the dental structure of the "Homo" genus. -
500 words
This does not require such an extensive word count and can alternatively be added
briefly in the introduction – the remaining word count can be added to more content-
heavy sections of the essay.
3. 6. Environmental factors affecting the general dental structure. The
general human dental structure and external factors affecting it - 500
words.
This section has been moved higher up in terms of sections and the name has also
been changed – because I am not an expert in the dental structure and all its
components yet, and it is likely the reader is not either, I need to explain the general
dental structure coherently, so that when I scientifically reference certain elements of
the dental structure, the reader correctly understands what I am referring to.
4. What is the “Homo” genus? – 1000 words
Very important – the “Homo” genus as a concept needs to be understood and
explained to commence this essay, because it explores this genus’ dental structure
specifically – there is also some differing opinions on what the “Homo” genus is.
- The “Homo” genus – a comparison to other human genera.
Important as the “Homo” genus differs in some ways to other human genera –
by understanding these differences, it will become easier to understand what
the “Homo” genus is.
- Transitional Hominins and the Pre-modern Homo – the difference.
Unimportant – previously I believed it to be important due to misinformation
that transitional hominins are considered part of the “Homo” genus, however,
they are not, therefore identifying and highlighting the difference between
transitional hominins and the pre-modern Homo are unnecessary. Although a
comparison may be useful, because I have a limited word count, I am unable to
add this.
- Prominent characteristics of the “Homo” genus
Important as highlighting specific features in members of the “Homo” genus
means that they become more distinctive and distinguishable to the reader,
, helping them to understand what the “Homo” genus is.
- Species of the “Homo” genus – a timeline.
Important as it somewhat delineates how this essay will progress and also
shows how the “Homo” genus’ species have gradually changed overtime. This
might also highlight some misconceptions, like the idea that each species came
one after the other, when some were living at the same time.
- Conflicting ideas
Important as it discusses points of debate within this area of research and
knowledge. It also allows me to clearly address how my essay will be affected
by these conflicting ideologies.
5. Evidence for the existence dental structure of the “Homo” genus and
each species – 1000 words (Critique and evaluation)
Very important – the essay will be based on existing evidence. By discussing the
limitations and reliability of different evidence, I can critically assess whether some
evidence is reliable and consistent to use to make conclusions, meaning that my
essay is as informationally correct as possible.
- Transitional Hominins
- Pre-modern Homo
Both sub-headings are unnecessary because Transitional Hominins are not
actually considered part of the “Homo” genus, therefore the “Homo” genus
does not need to be categorised further and can generally be talked about.
6. Overview of areas each “Homo” species inhabited. – 500 words
Very important because by knowing where each species lived and at what time, we
are made aware of what food and resources were available, what environments they
lived in and in what general conditions. Evidence should be included in this to ensure
reliability.
7. How have environmental changes affected the dental structure in species
within the “Homo” genus? How have different environments related to the
dental structures of each “Homo” species? – 1100 words
Very important – directly relates the environment and its resources to why the dental
structure of different species became a certain way and how. The most important
section as it brings all previous information together to form the main part of the
essay and answers the question.
8. Conclusion - 200 words
Important – it will briefly summarise how the dental structure has changed, evaluate
how successful my essay was in answering the question, and discuss why this field of
research is important.
9. Bibliography
Required – details all sources used in my essay, correct referencing.
, Current Essay Structure:
1. Abstract – 200 words
2. Introduction – 500 words
3. The general human dental structure and external factors affecting it – 1000
words.

Current EPQ Essay Plan:
Abstract – 200 words
What is the essay about?
Why is this topic important?
What conclusions were made from the essay?
Introduction – 500 words
Talk about human fascination about origins of humanity and constant pursuit for
answers since the start of their existence.
Address how some people have reached conclusions to question, but answers
differ from person to person: from religion and religious interpretation to lesser
and wider known scientific theories and ideologies.
Talk about how science throughout history been based on evidence available to
humans, so most accepted and seemingly logical theories have been based
around worldly evidence, these theories can be proven.
