Multicultural counselling responds professionally to people from groups termed as a minority in
terms of culture and race. Lillian Comas-Diaz studied the Puerto Rican women who spent their
life migrating to find satisfaction in the environment. The article also showed how the immigrant
women coped with life psychologically and how they developed their identity. The article goes
further to show how multicultural counselling worked with immigrant women. The study was to
show the psychological needs of Puerto Rican women as they lived in the circular life on
movement in search of the best condition for their living.
Multicultural Counseling
Multicultural counselling is shown through the experiences of Nereida, whose life is around
Puerto Rico women, Joe (the man who got married to Nereida and later divorced), Solymor and
the management in her company in the U.S.A. Lillian Comas-Diaz is also a participant since she
offered Multicultural therapy to Nereida.
For Multicultural psychology adaptation to professionalism and acceptance, the following
has to be addressed; attachment to places and identity with a place, the development of women's
identity in the society, acceptance to belonging to a specific ethnic group, living beyond struggles
in marriage life, understanding and acceptance stereotypes around power, acceptance of
whichever skin color, the position of women in our society as perceived by men and broken
family relationships. The basic in psychotherapy is to have a hand of help to real-world problems
and psychological problems.
