Servant Leadership in Diverse Contexts: Exploring Rastafarianism and Chinese Culture
In 1977 Robert Greenleaf brought the term and theory of “servant leadership” to the
masses. Servant leaders are conscious of the needs and strive to take care of their followers and
communities. Servant leaders put interests of others above their own. Servant leaders are like
shepherds who watch over their herd by caring for them and guiding them as opposed to taking
an authoritative stance. Religions and cultures around the world have different principles and
ideas that are carried on by traditions. Many traditions have structures and ideas that are different
from one another but can be similar in nature in relation to servant leadership. Here we will
discuss the similarities found in the principles and philosophies of the Rastafari faith and the
Chinese culture (Ghalavi & Nastiezaie, 2020).
Rastafarianism
Rastafarianism first originated in Jamaica in 1930. This being the year of the crowning of
the emperor Haile Selassie I in 1930. The first Rastafarian community was founded in 1940 by
Leonard Howell, a Rastafarian preacher. The movement grew larger over the next few decades,
as public figures such as Bob Marley, a devoted Rastafarian and musician brought the movement
to the masses. Oppressed black people from around the world embraced Rastafarianism as it
evolved and grew with different leaders and figures (History.com Editors, 2018).
Rastafarianism has origins which go back to Ethiopia in the 18th century. Many who
learned of and converted to Christianity there and in America looked to the Bible for guidance
during slavery. Many Biblical ideals are used in Rastafarianism. They believed that Ethiopia
would one day have a royal leader. Other leaders such as Marcus Garvey and different books and
pamphlets were released that encouraged Rastafarianism. When Haile Selassie became emperor
, on November 2, 1930, it was believed he was descendant of the Queen of Sheba and King
Solomon of the Bible. He was the leader that Rastafarians believed Marcus Garvey spoke of. At
the time Selassie was named emperor, Jamaican had been colonized by England and was under
the rule of King George V. Jamaican preachers then declared that Haile Selassie was leader as
opposed to King George V. Growing as a social and political movement, many leaders were
targeted due to their preaching of the ideas and following ritual practices of Rastafarianism.
Many important leaders were arrested for treason, but the movement continues to grow stronger
(History.com Editors, 2018).
Rastafarianism and Servant Leadership
Rastafarianism has strong roots in Christianity and Judaism. Selassie being an emperor
over his people and representing pride, was also thought to be holding one of the oldest thrones
on Earth. The Rastafarian movement was a direct result of slavery. It has evolved as a way of life
for people to resist and escape slavery. It was created for people to have their own identity and
religion. Many do not see it as a religion but a way of life or a movement (Chawane, 2014).
Slavery in itself is an oppressive system which prevents any type of growth and causes consistent
trauma, sadness, pain, and many other problems for the slave. Rastafarianism in itself having the
main principle of resisting, escaping from, or fighting slavery are principles that servant
leadership fully supports. A person cannot be autonomous as a slave and certainly will have a
painful life. Servant leaders fight this type of oppression, and so does Rastafarianism. Leaders in
Rastafarianism have fought battles which evolve around ending oppression. Rastafarians also do
not believe in physically harming their oppressors. They want people to learn from strife and not
be traumatized by the way things are handled. Their goal was to drive away oppressors if
possible, but to not be harmful or disrespectful (Chawane, 2014). A servant leader chooses to
care of their community and put the needs of others first. They do not anger before action or hold
on to authority. The Rastafari believes in these principles and the freedom of their people.
