The plot of Romeo and Juliet is a classic story of a Juliet and Romeo fall in love while the
parents of the couple are enemies and the story ends in tragedy of Juliet and Romeo killing
themselves.
The two feuding families of Verona are Capulets and Montagues. The head of Capulet family
plans a fest and wants to introduce his daughter Juliet to a Count Paris and wants her to marry
him. Montagues son Romeo and his friends disguise themselves and attend the party and Romeo
was hoping to meet Rosaline who is his beloved at the party instead he falls in love with Juliet.
Romeo expresses his love for Juliet when Juliet was in her balcony and they both confess their
love for one another and decide to get married the next day. “Parting is such sweet sorrow that
I shall say goodnight till it be morrow” a quote from the play. Juliet says goodbye to her lover
Romeo anticipating another meeting the next day. with the help of Juliet’s nurse, they both get
married secretly. After the marriage Juliet’s cousin Tybalt challenges Romeo and Romeo refuses
to fight but his friend Mercutio picks up the fight with Tybalt and Mercutio gets killed as Romeo
tries to intervene and stop the fight. And in anger Romeo kills Tybalt. Capulet family mourns
Tybalt’s death and push Juliet to marry Paris and the parents are unaware of Juliet’s marriage
with Romeo. Friar Laurence gives her a sleeping draught that makes Juliet seem dead. Friar
sends a message to Romeo to come and recue his sleeping Juliet, but the message does not reach
Romeo as there is Plague in town and the messenger could not leave Verona. Romeo hears the
news that Juliet is dead from his servant and buys poison and goes to Verona and arrives at the
, tomb and is surprised to see mourning Paris and kills him and drinks the poison and dies. Juliet
wakes up from the coma and finds out what happened and stabs herself and dies. feuding parents
of Romeo and Juliet make peace after the death of their children and promise to erect a
monument in Romeo and Juliet’s memory (Movie: Romeo and Juliet 2013).
The staging is romantic love and setting is in the city of Verona a city in Northeastern Italy in
14th century. lighting is appropriate to the scene, costumes, the costumes worn by the actors
reflect the persons status in society of Renaissance. Female characters had long dress with
long sleeves appears like velvet material with mild sophisticated colors and grandeur fit for
queens and princesses. I movie had beautiful sceneries with palaces and huge courtyards and
lavish landscaping dialogues and story was presented in a simple manner and captivating to
the audience the romance and the attraction between the Romeo and Juliet (Levenson J &
Shakespeare w 1987).
The mood was intense and gripping I was wishing and hoping that their love will be successful,
and they will be united. The romance between Romeo and Juliet is well captured by the director.
The scenes of Juliet in her balcony and Romeo waiting around the palace to express his love is
one of the best scenes of the movie.
The process of bringing a play from the text and creating a movie is made possible by director of
the movie and the design team. The production of the movie is based on a central theme that the
whole team agrees upon and collaborate to make a movie that they have a vision of how the
movie is going to look like, sound like and this movie Romeo and Juliet was inspired by the Role
playing of the characters in the play. William Shakespeare’s timeless tale of love and tragedy is
well made, and captured the romance and drama, captivating the audience with lavish costumes,
background lighting, camera, dialogues and best performance by lead roles and supporting
actors. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
