Concepts and concerns that are important to politics of the Earth:
Legitimacy, norms, …
Environmental change is a "crisis of governance … (not) a crisis of the environment or a failure of the market"
- Our inability to come to agreement on things that we need to address and how to address these issues, how to
tackle problems and how to achieve collective action
- Problem due to nature of problems as well, problems are really complex
- Our institutions are not well designed to address these problems
Different layers of governance (regional, national, international and global), with each different actors, rules and modes
of governance -> politics of the Earth happens in these levels; formal politics
Politics also unfolds under citizens; Informal politics
- We demand decision makers to make ethical decisions
- Influence formal politics
- NGOs
- Scientists important to make knowledge available for the general public (how apolitical is scientific assessment?)
○ Overseen by governments
○ Reviewed and signed off by governments
○ Scientists are political

Politics is not only formal politics, but entails actions, inaction and silence of every actors (everyone, we ourselves
too) -> we are all "political"
Political actors such as government, industries, consumers, scientists, etc. trying to influence politics on different levels
and in different ways. Politics of the Earth is about the relationship between political forces and environmental
