CHFD304: Perception
Question #1
What is the process of perception? Before answering that question let’s discuss what perception
is, perception is when you become aware of something using your senses. Prior experiences a
person may have also impacts how and individual may perceive something. Another interesting
thing about perception is how you could have a group of people looking at and experiencing the
same exact thing, and yet all of those people can have different perceptions of what they may
have experienced or seen. Now I can go over the process of perception. It is a very complex
process. Perceiving involves processing information with our senses and also using our brain to
analyze the information we take in from our senses. Through that process some information can
be lost or changed, thus often making us unable to process stimulus exactly how they exist.
Hearing something and/ or seeing something begins the process of perception, and then the
information you just received becomes a part of your inner sensory process. Sensory receptors
are used by each sense and these receptors are used to respond to different types of energy or
stimulus. This process starts what is known as transduction, transduction is when the information
you received from the sensory receptors is transformed into a message that is then sent to the
brain via neural networks and neurons. The electrical signals are what transforms into our
individual experiences. These experiences are also based on our previous encounters and
perceptions. If we have previous knowledge or experiences with a stimulus or situation it may
, prompt how we choose to respond. An example of how the process plays out let’s say you
wanted to go for a walk. Next thing you know you hear thunder outside even though it may not
be raining at just yet you may change your mind about going on that walk. The reason you may
change your mind is because in the past when you have heard thunder it was usually already
raining or followed by rain. So to avoid possibly getting caught in the rain you decide to stay
home. That is how the process of perception works.
Question #2
Neurons ae a type of cell with many parts that allow the transmission of information from
sensory receptors. Neurons communicate with other neurons that perform similar jobs or
specialize in the same things. Neurons actually do not physically touch each other there are small
gaps between each neuron called the synaptic gaps where the electrical messages are transmitted
from one to another. The varying parts if the neuron are all necessary for the electrical
transmission of a message throughout the neurons. The axon is important part of the neuron it is
like the tail of the neuron and it is where the electrical signals from the neuron are transmitted to
be received by another neuron. The axon is a long nerve fiber that is attached to another part of
the neuron known as the soma, it transmits the information that is passed on from the soma. In
many ways the axon is similar to electrical wires. Both axons and electrical wires transmit and
carry electrical charges and messages. In an axon messages move using an electrical current just
like an electrical wire. Axons have both negative and positive charges that run through them
similar to electrical messages. Considering how neurons in general are used to transmit electrical
messages throughout our brains there are a lot of comparisons to be made on how they function
similarly to electrical wires. Electrical wires are also quite literally made to transmit electrical
