Introduction
Military deception is operated at three levels, the tactical, the operational, and strategic.
Its purpose is to purposefully mislead one’s opponent, specifically those who make military
decisions, regrading different aspects of friendly forces, such as capabilities, intentions, or
operations, thus causing the adversaries to believe, or take actions that are not beneficial to
themselves, but to the side that is conducting the deception operation.1 Examining and reviewing
historical accounts and how military deception played out offers insight and lessons on deception
as technology and humanity moves forward. It presents not just the viewpoint of the side
conducting the deception, but also those deceived, thus giving access to seeing just where and
how the military deception was successful. The American Civil War is a subject where military
deception can be observed in great detail; an example such as Union Maj. Gen. William S.
Rosecrans crossing the Tennessee River during the Chickamauga campaign presents a excellent
source of the principles of deception.2
Principles of Deception
The principles of deception are Focus, Objective, Centralized Planning and Control,
Security, Timeliness, and Integration. Gen. Rosecrans needed to apply each of these principles, in
some manner, in order to achieve success in his operation. Rosecrans knew this in order for him
to achieve his goal of crossing the Tennessee River and positioning behind the Confederate
forces.
