Introduction
Fires affect different structures in different ways. Many components contribute to how
the building reacts to a fire and how the structure holds up. This case study focuses on how
prevention through design could help eliminate the possibility of a fire or greatly reduce the
impact that a fire would have on the building. This paper will discuss the main causes of the fire,
any associated design flaws, how prevention through design (PtD) could help and be used to
eliminate potential hazards. The high-rise fire in focus for this paper is the Twin Towers located
in New York and the event that occurred on September 11th, 2001.
Main Causes of the fires
First as it is well known, the main cause of the fire was the impact the buildings sustained
when two planes came into contact with each tower. What made the fires greater was that the jets
had extra fuel onboard that erupted upon contact with the buildings. This then caused more fires
to form within the buildings (Fires in Twin Towers (2011). Not only were there flames present,
but the added wind helped fuel the fire and provide it more substance to grow. The materials
within the office building were also a great source for flammable material to be present such as
paper, wood, plastic. All of which contributed to the growing fire making it hotter and hotter
until the building began to collapse.
Any design flaws
One would think that a building made mostly of steel and glass would be safe when it came to
terms of fire. Steel has the ability, when heated to a high enough degree, to melt. According to
