Positive and negative images of the public services.
This is a very important aspect of the media unit as the public opinion is mainly formed on
what the media writes and says for the Public Services. Most of the things happening in the
UPS are private events, far from the public eye, which makes the media the reason for the
pressure that is put on the Police, especially nowadays. Some of the news that the media is
distributing could be with many more details, which essentially is twisting the whole truth of
the case they are looking into. There are tv shows that also investigate the performance of the
UPS in a most commonly negative way, as this is a way of increasing their views. Most of the
time the lights are being put over the Police as the crimes are one of the major problems
questioned by the public and one of the biggest problems in the UK. A report produced by the
Sun shows that around 31% of the news they are publishing is related to crime news and
police investigations. Which by itself once again shows the media's influence on the UPS and
the public opinion. Related to that there are numbers of dramas broadcasted and sponsored by
Netflix that aim to show the inside of the Police Force, which in most cases are functional
details that cause distress. For example, the Line of Duty series on Netflix implemented how
corrupt the police are and how police officers are part of the biggest crime organisations.
There are no official details of that but seeing this on the TV makes people believe it, as we
are all used to watching something without questioning the reliability of the materials.

Negative images of the Public Service influenced by the
media.
Brutality.
On many occasions, the Public Services presence could be implemented brutally in the public
eye as this is a way of selling stories by the media. The brutality is normally presented
through the Police, as the media uses cases in which the public is in a position of a victim.
This has been done as a way of making people believe that the media is the true voice in the
situation, making them believe in the things they are saying which usually results in a lot of
views. This could have many negative effects as it makes the Police look unreliable source
for protection and eventually could result in a lot of protests organised by the concerned
citizens that believe in the things that the media is saying. An example of this common event
is the case of the tragic death of a female, Sarah Everard this year where a serving police
officer was accused of causing her death under very brutal circumstances. /2/The whole story
is true, but the way the media presented how the selection process and the whole system of
testing the psychological health of the serving officers are easily tested made the public
believe and question the skills of the whole police force. What I mean by this, is many big
media companies as the iNews and the Guardian published horrific details around the
circumstances around the murder, and seeing this as a public member could make you believe
that this is expected by the whole force. Reading this made me question the whole friability
that we have around the Police. The details realized by the media caused a huge protest in
Central London on the 13th of March 2021, as many women raised awareness around the
serving police officers who murdered the victim, Sarah Everard. This had many negatives
effects as the protests went from peaceful to harmful when the police arrived. This by itself,
once again proves that the media is the one to blame for making the police look brutal

overall, blaming every officer for the actions of others. This is extremely bad and negative, as
every person pays for his own mistakes and the other has nothing to do with the murder,
should not be standing on the same level and receiving the same judgments. As at the end of
the day, if something bad happens we will be killing the police, and they will be the ones
arriving first at our door to help. That is why, in my opinion, we all as a public should look at
reliable media sources and make our conclusion alone, as every truth is different when put
through a different perspective. We must ensure that before putting labels and reflecting the
police image negatively, we have the whole truth on the table.
Corruption.
Another negative image that affects, is the corruption that is been implemented in the actions
of the Public Service. Many tv shows aim to show us the public the underground and the
inside world of the UPS or in other words how common corruption is. There used to be a
show called ‘NO Land’ that aimed to show how the cartels work closely with the police,
exchanging private information for money. Another example of that action is the West
Midlands Serious Crime Squad that was very active in the ’90s. This organisation that was
lately exposed by the media used law forbidden techniques during interviews, making
suspects confess under the pressure of brutal actions conducted by the people part of the
squad. /3/ This squad of people used many aggressive techniques to make the whole process
easier for them, reducing the time as they were putting a lot of pressure on the people that
were questioned or suspected of committing a crime. They used to put plastic bags on the
heads of the suspects, making them give false statements and avoid the whole lawful
procedure.
By putting this information on the media and all the newspapers they made a huge corrupt
world the media caused a lot of negative effects on the public services. Even though that was

not a very commonly used method of questioning people, the public was forced to change
their whole perspective. For example, if somebody was questioned, they felt unsafe with the
procedure which made them feel uncomfortable during the polygraph tests which by itself
made the result unreliable. This happening was such a bad image for the whole system as the
citizens started to believe that there is no truth, and the criminals could be still walking the
streets. The actions of the squad made the whole Police look unreliable and created a lot of
extra pressure in the whole working process. Many citizens started to take justice in their
heads as a way of finding the truth. Which by itself had another negative effect as the crime
rate started to increase. A prove of that is the case of Peter Jefferson who took justice into his
hands and killed the person who then he believed was responsible for the killing of his wife.
It was later proved that the person who he killed was just a witness of the crime, not a
committer which put Peter J. into prison. Making him part of the statistics as part of the
negative effect that media have on the Police as people started to question the procedures and
make a false conclusion, putting innocent people in danger and making them pay for crimes
they have not committed. /4/ The corruption, in my opinion, was something that could have
been prevented if actions were taken on time as many people were going to get the right of
going through a fair trial, not paying for someone else’s mistakes.
Going into details about that this reflected the moral of the police, making them appear as law
brokers, not protectors. Many police officers were faced to watch how the procedures were
conducted which led to a serious mental change in the way they do their job. This by
psychology was called apophenia, as seeing something daily makes you believe is the right
thing to do. This by itself makes me believe that the West Midlands Serious Crime Squad is
the one to blame for changing the whole working procedures at that time and making many
officers part of the corrupt world they organised. Eventually, those procedures are still
conducted by other countries with low income as many police officers are forced to become
