Outcome 4
Understand organisational and legal requirements

i. Explain the salon’s service times for completing manicure and pedicure services
Manicures should take around 20 to 45 minutes depending on treatment chosen.
Pedicure should take around 20 to 75 minutes depending on treatment chosen.
The receptionist should therefore ask the client which treatment they would like to choose so
that the therapist is able to prepare the work station accordingly – this prevents time
wastages, clients can calculate the time is will take for their treatment, clients will not be left
waiting and it allows the therapist to work within allocated time.

Outcome 5
Understand how to work safely and effectively when providing manicure and pedicure
services

c. Describe what contact dermatitis is and how to avoid developing it when carrying
out nail services
It is a type of eczema that is triggered by having contact with a particular substance with
which the individual is allergic to– it causes the skin to become dry and irritated.
For the client: being careful when filing the nail, reduce acetone/ polish remover contact with
surrounding skin as this might trigger an allergic reaction if client is sensitive to substance,
also making sure water isn’t too hot when soaking client’s nail.
For the therapist: wash hands rather than use hand sanitiser as alcohol dries the skin faster
and may also irritate the skin, when possible, wear gloves to reduce contact with chemicals
that may trigger dermatitis.

d. Describe how to prepare and use the tools and materials for the manicure and
pedicure services
The area must be prepared in a way that meets the requirements of the industry code of
Practice for Nail services. The therapist must also maintain good personal hygiene and
appearance and wear appropriate PPE where required. The therapist must make sure to keep
all tools and equipment clean and use them in the appropriate manner. Position client
correctly and have equipment placed accordingly for ease of access and use, make sure to
position yourself in a way to prevent straining. Dispose of waste material correctly to make
sure no cross-contamination occurs. Make sure to complete the service in a commercially
viable time to allow for the following client to also have enough time for their treatment.
Finally, make sure the client’s records are up to date and any amendments made written;
leave the work area in a condition that would make it suitable to have further nail services.

i. Describe how to effectively and safely position tools and materials for manicure
and pedicure services
Keeping tools close to the therapist at arm’s reach away from client to make sure they do
not injure themselves.
Make sure metal tools, such as cuticle nipper, cuticle scraper and nail clippers are placed
with the ‘sharp’ end in a small glass with a cotton pad and diluted barbicide – this is done
to disinfect the tools as well as preventing injury.

Outcome 6
Understand how to perform client consultation, treatment planning and preparation
