1. Many parents and youth professionals are worried about adolescents playing (too) many
games. What would you advice these professionals and parents based on this paper,
focusing on the time spent on gaming?
The paper by Peeters et al. (2019) indicates that with respect to gaming behavior, hours spend on
gaming per week is an important characteristic for classifying individuals into a class (recreational,
engaged or problematic gamers). Therefore, based on this paper I would advice parents and
professionals to keep a good eye on the hours per week your child is gaming and try to prevent this
from going up, risking your child to go from a recreational to engaged to problematic gamer. Also,
for classifying whether a child is a problematic gamer, noting how much time he/she spends on
gaming per week is a good indicator.

2. When focusing on the risk factors for problematic gaming, how do the findings of Peeters
et al. (2019) support the need for developing a serious game as intervention for chronic ill
children?
Findings from Peeters et al. (2019) show that problematic gamers are less socially competent than
engaged and recreational gamers, and this holds for both males and females. Experiencing problems
with friendship (formation) and social interaction appear to be important risk factors for problematic
gaming. The game proposed by Alexandridis et al. (2021) focuses on training socioemotional skills of
children with chronic conditions. This concept is thus supported by the findings of Peeters et al.
(2019) as if children can become more socially competent through the game, they are less at risk for
developing an internet gaming disorder.

3. What is a meta-analysis? What is the added value of conducting a meta-analysis?
A meta-analysis is a research which combines the results of previously conducted scientific studies to
form a more precise conclusion about a theory or relationship between variables. As a meta-analysis
contains much more data than a single study and sample sizes are increased significantly. Therefore,
the power of the study increases and the results provide a more precise and stable estimate of the
relationship studied.

4. “Schadenfreude” is a very popular concept nowadays, what exactly does it mean in the
context of celebrity bashing? Are the results of this study in line with the idea of
schadenfreude? Explain.
Schadenfreude in the context of celebrity bashing means that negative celebrity gossip can be
associated with feelings of fun and entertainment, feelings of being amused by the misfortune of
celebrities. This has been confirmed by some studies. The results form Ouvrein et al. (2020) go
against the concept of schadenfreude. Namely, this study finds that exposure to celebrity bashing
significantly stimulates negative feelings among adolescents, it increased feelings of anger, sadness,
frustration and powerlessness. Furthermore, it decreased feelings of amusement, a result which is in
contrast with the idea of schadenfreude.
