Week 2 Discussion: The Rise of Communism
and Fascism
 Option 1: Examine Marx's writings on communism and socialism and compare
them to how they manifested in reality? What worked and what didn't? What
misconceptions do we have about his original intent based on what we see in past or
current governments?
 Option 2: Compare and contrast communism and fascism. Select one example
for each to examine the origins of the governments, their accomplishments, and their
failures. What accounts for the fact that the masses mobilized to support these
movements? Elaborate.
 Option 3: Examine Depression-Era social programs (select one or more to
examine in detail). Were the fears of a communist take-over based on the
implementation of these programs grounded in reality? Why or why not? How do they
compare to social programs in place today?
Professor and class,
I chose option 2: “Compare and contrast communism and fascism. Select one example
for each to examine the origins of the governments, their accomplishments, and their
failures. What accounts for the fact that the masses mobilized to support these
movements? Elaborate.”
First to be able to compare and contrast communism and fascism you need to know
what each one means, communism means, “A political system based on radical
equality” (Magstadt, p.37, 2010). Now that we know what communism means, the
definition of fascism is, “A totalitarian political system that is headed by a popular
charismatic leader and in which a single political party and carefully controlled violence
form the bases of complete social and political control” (Magstadt, p.31, 2010). The
founder of communism was Karl Marx. “Marxism made its first appearance in 1847 with
the publication of a short treatise, The Communist Manifesto, written by Karl Marx”
(Duiker, Pg. 18, 2015). With communism they believe that classes make no sense,
everyone should be viewed as one and not separated. With this you can make out from
the definition where it says it is based on radical equality. It is also believed by the
communists that the government should own and have access to everything, that
everything needs to be ran through the government. Fascism believes in privately
owned business, not being run through the government but rather the state. “Fascism
differs from communism in that the economic structure, although controlled by the state,
is privately owned” (Magstadt, p.31, 2010). The founder of fascism was Benito
Mussolini. With communism and fascism even though they were founded many years
ago we still use them today throughout all of our lives. Many places are run by
communism and that is okay, also many places are run by fascism. In my opinion
whatever works best for your country keep doing it.
