1.1 TEACHING INSIGHTS (PRE OBSERVATION ACTIVITIES)

Pre-observation insights will help you to develop your own perspective on teaching and
learning and prepare you for successful observation of the context in which you are doing your
practical teaching.

Make sure that you understand the goal of each activity and read the instructions carefully
before completing each observation and activity in class.

The activities are based on the outcomes and assessment criteria below. At the end of the
section, make sure that you have reached these criteria. This will provide you with valuable
insight for activities in the next section of the portfolio.

• Identify how issues of observation is specific to diversity in your teaching practice situation.

• Evaluate approaches to teaching practice with regard to the way in which they
accommodate diversity in the school where you are placed. 1

The way we look at teaching and learning is greatly influenced by our own background and
experiences. Every teacher needs to be aware of her/his view of teaching and learning. Your own
view of teaching will influence how you observe and interpret teaching and eventually also how
you teach.

Complete the following activities to gain insight into your own perspective on teaching and
learning.



1.1.2 MY TEACHING PERSPECTIVE


As an aspiring teacher, please answer the following questions about teaching based on your
experience.

1. What does teaching mean to you?

Teaching allows me the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the future of both
South Africa and the life of a child. I am a firm believer that no child has to be somebody
because of their family’s situation. As an educator I have the chance to give a learner
something that can never ever be taken away from the learner. I had a very unfortunate
upbringing however school and the teachers that helped me provided me with enough
support and love to make something of myself. They taught me to believe in myself and my
abilities. I truly hope that I will have the same chance to make a positive influence on
children’s futures.

2. How would you best describe teaching and what it involves?

I would describe teaching as a rewarding career with many challenges. Some challenges
are positive and other challenges are truly heart breaking. Teaching is not just a career
where at 2h00 you pack up and go home. Teaching can take place both inside the
classroom or on the hockey field. Life lessons are often taught to children by teachers,
some children speak to teachers because they feel they cannot talk to their parents about
their concerns. As the educator you take all the emotions and feelings with you.

3. How do you see your role as a teacher?

I see my role as a teacher as the chance to make a difference both academically and
emotionally. I see it as a chance to make a difference in a child’s life both currently and into
their future. I see it as an opportunity for some children to bond with an adult , and
understand that some adults to have the capacity to hear and see them for who they truly
are.

4. What is your understanding of learning?

My understanding of learning is the addition to the learnings academic ability daily. Learning
can be in terms of academic content, further understanding of previously taught work or a
lesson that may influence the future of that child. Perhaps an idea of a possible career for a
learner.



What do you expect to learn or gain from this process of observation and teaching practice?

I expect to gain an insight into the way different teachers approach different situations.
These situations include other staff, learners, teaching content and the administration
required for a well-run classroom. I also expect to learn a variety of successful ways to
manage a classroom and to see if there is a pattern in the correct way to get information
and learning content across to the class.

1.1.3 MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY (BELIEFS)


Write a brief teaching philosophy. Include all the aspects indicated below.

a. Why you want to be a teacher.

I was once told as a 15-year-old that I would never amount to anything and that my
mathematics was atrocious. From that day on I aspired to be a mathematics educator and to
give every child the courage and the desire to want to better themselves and never feel the
embarrassment that I felt. I have always aspired to be a mathematics educator.

b. What subject and age group you would like to teach and why?

Mathematics always has an answer. For me life has so many unanswered problems and
questions, yet maths shows us that there will always be an outcome. Currently I teach children
between the age of 13 and 16 and I must say that I really do enjoy the challenges each age
group brings. It would be difficult to pick a specific age group. I do enjoy teaching high school
as I enjoy the individuality and cheekiness of the children.

c. How do you believe teaching should take place?

I believe that learners learn best in a safe, comfortable environment. I always chose to see
the best in them and form my own opinion of each learner. I also make sure to take the time
to learn each person’s name and make sure that I am pronouncing it correctly, this to me is
vital as it shows the children I am interested in them. I also do not believe in a silent classroom.
I allow chatting and class participation throughout my entire lesson.
