 One more factor from one of the above – IE. Ringlemann effect

Group Processes
The 4 different stages of group development:

 Forming
 Storming
 Norming
 Performing

All groups of athletes go through all four of these stages. But the time spent by the athletes in each
stage varies depending on the type of athletes they are and the sport that they are competing in.

If a group of athletes progress through all of the stages they are still liable to be pushed back onto an
earlier stage. This can be caused by things such as important people in the group leaving and having
to replace them with new athletes, this will force the group to go back stages.

The forming stage is the first stage of the athletes grouping. The forming stage is when the athletes
familiarize and get to know the other members of the group, they will then start to form a bond with
the other members of the group. It is important for the athletes to get along and know each other
because it could mean a better relationship whilst competing. After they have gotten to know each
other they can decide whether it is right for them to stay in the group or leave and move to another
group. Whilst the group is getting to know each other they are assessing their peers strengths and
weaknesses. Whilst the group is bonding and forming members will start to identify their roles
within the group, after they have identified where they stand within the group they will make the

, decision on if the feel they can fit into the group. Group leaders will identify themselves during the
forming stage.

An example of when the forming stage would be used is just after a team has been formed they all
go out doing a group activity to try and bond and start to form relationships with each other. in the
forming stage the players might endure some banter.

The storming stage is the second stage of the group development, In the storming stage conflict
starts to happen between certain individuals in the group which can upset the group atmosphere. In
groups it is unlikely that all of the individuals are going to get on well which could affect the
performance. Individuals will question the position and the authority of the leader, if the leader is
question individuals may not perform to their maximum effort. Conflicts mostly start due to
demands being set on the group whilst individual try to get a better role in the group. Whilst the
storming stage is undergoing the leader usually tries to help them move towards what is expected
from the team.

An example of when storming has happened in a group is in the photo below, Mario Ballotelli is a
player that believes he should be a more influential and important player for the club ahead of
Vincent Kompany, the captain, a conflict has occurred because Mario Ballotelli does not agree with
something that he has said.

In the norming stage the conflicts and problems that have previously occurred in the storming stage
get resolved. Each member of the group starts to forget about their personal goals and tries to work
toward common goals of the group. This is when group cohesion is made. As the players get happier
with the way they are being used in the group the more effort and the respect for the other
members of the group begins to increase, the 'Captain' of the group will then start to let other
members make the decisions and expect the players to take responsibility for themselves, also in the
norming stage partnerships have already formed between players meaning that they will put in
more effort to do well for each other.

In the performing stage of the groups development the group begins to gel and function as a unit
not as individuals, The group moves past the conflicts that have previously occurred and begin to
work towards the teams goal. As the group is now more experienced they are now able to control
themselves with minimal supervision. this means the team will be able to make decisions for
themselves without conflicts occurring. in the performing stage you can see a fast change in
performance. For example in football the players know what their teammates are going to attempt
and can make a run to accompany another players thoughts.
