Past, Present and future implications of our online identities

The internet has forever changed how people interact with the world around them. It has

helped people become more productive, made tasks like shopping easier, how we view

entertainment and it has even redefined how we how we socialized with each other. With this

social change, it has paved way to allow people to create their own online identity. It is almost

impossible to avoid making an online identity in today’s world. When you sign into your bank to

do online banking or check an online store to make a purchase you are asked to create a unique

identifier, a user ID, your new online identity that can now be used by websites to identify you

when you access their site. These types of identities enable a person to access a site to perform an

action or view a service like streaming a movie. Even though data sites collect about you help

enable a more personable visit, they are not a true representation of who you are. And then there

are the social media and online gaming identities. With these identities, some represent the true

individuals while others delve more into the world of fantasy and make-believe. So, is it possible

to create and maintain an authentic online identity? Or does it get lost in a fabricated identity.




Years ago, before Facebook, Instagram or tiktok, when a hashtag was just a button on

your telephone there existed bulletin board systems (BBS). A collection of networked computers

using dial up modems to communicate together. Operated by hobbyist, enthusiasts and curious

teenagers they would access BBS sites to get obtain information or software. Back in the early

days phone companies would charge for long distance calls, so to save money most BBS admins

would host regular in person meet-ups to exchange information. Usually at a local park or other

favorite hang spot. It is an interesting look at the first steps in social media. Where it was

impossible to stay anonymous because of these real-life meetups. Kevin Driscall, an assistant

media studies professor at the university of virginal said it best “Online disagreements — flame

wars — could be kept in check, because the cost of being a jerk escalated with the likelihood of

later seeing your interlocutor face to face.” With the loss of the anonymous persona, maintaining

an authentic online identity was fairly easy. But it in the present-day world, it’s a lot easier to

remain hidden.



As of 2020 there are more than 4 billion people on the internet worldwide, while

Globally there are 5.19 billion that now

use mobile phones. While social media

users have passed the 3.8 billion mark,

and will keep exploding as more and

more people turn to their mobile devices

for their social media. With The rapid

growth of social media, this has impacted the way people communicate both with friends and

family as well with people that they have never met in real life. While in most cases online iden-

tities mirror the individual’s true real identity, in some cases this is not always true. With the at-

tention users receive on their posts, some individuals become immersed in there next like, com-

ment or that audience interactions. As individuals gain more attention the pressure is on to main-

tain a certain image. This is when a user’s content is deliberately exaggerated to gain that atten-

tion or public reaction. Once the content is fabricated, then their authentic self is lost and a new
