5th grade STAAR test Math Review Questions and answers. 100% Accurate. Graded A The area of a rectangular garage is 20 square meters. The garage is 5 meters long. How wide is it? - To solve: Area = Length x width, you have length (5) but not width, and you know the total square meters = 20 so 5 x 4 = 20 Answer: 4 A rectangular picnic area is 100 yards wide and 127 yards long. What is its perimeter? - To solve: a perimeter is the sum of all sides, if you know width (100) and length (127) then you know the other two sides are equal to their counterpart (100 and 127). Answer: 454 Each side of a square kitchen tile is 3 inches long. What is the tile's area? - To solve: squares have all equal sides, so 3 inches x 4 = 12 for perimeter, for area it is 3 x 3 or 9. Answer: 9 A square piece of gold has a perimeter of 80 millimeters. How long is each side? - To solve: squares have all equal sides, so 80 divided by 4. Answer: 20 The area of the surface of a workbook is 54 square inches. The workbook is 6 inches wide. How tall is it? - To solve: area = length x width. You have L x 6 = 54 (trying to find L or Length). What x 6 = 54? Answer: 9 A rectangle has a length of 3 inches and width of 4 inches. 1 inch in this model is equivalent to 20 feet. How many square feet is the area of the rectangle? - To solve: you first have to convert the inches to equivalent feet (1 inch is equivalent to 20 feet so 3 x 20, and 4 x 20). Then (and only then) can you multiply to find the area (L x W = Area, or 60 x 80 = 4800 square feet is the area). Answer: 4800 A square has a length of 60 feet and a width of 80 feet. 20 feet = 1 inch. How many square inches is the area of the square? - You have to divide (20 feet = 1 inches, so 60 divided by 20, and 80 divided by 20) first. Then and only then can you multiple length times width to get the area. Answer: 12 .97 x 100 = ? - To solve: multiplying times power of ten, you just move the decimal to the right the exact number of zeros there are in the power of ten. Answer: .97 becomes 97 10 x .9 - To solve: multiplying times power of ten, you just move the decimal to the right the exact number of zeros there are in the power of ten. Answer: 9 100 x .9 - To solve: multiplying times power of ten, you just move the decimal to the right the exact number of zeros there are in the power of ten. Answer: 90 10,000 x .05 - To solve: multiplying times power of ten, you just move the decimal to the right the exact number of zeros there are in the power of ten. Answer: 500 100,000 x 98 - To solve: multiplying times power of ten, you just move the decimal to the right the exact number of zeros there are in the power of ten. Answer: 9,800,000 1,000,000 x 389 - To solve: multiplying times power of ten, you just move the decimal to the right the exact number of zeros there are in the power of ten. Answer: 389,000,000 Is 7 a prime number? - Yes. It can only be divided by 1 and itself. Is 12 a prime number? - No. it can be divided by 2, 3, 4, itself, etc. Is 18 a prime number? - No. It can be divided by 2, 6, itself, etc. Is 3 a prime number? - Yes. It can only be divided by 1 and itself. 4,000 divided by 10 - To divide a number by a power of ten, just move the decimal to the LEFT the number of 0's there are in the power of 10. Answer: 400 18,198 divided by 100 - To divide a number by a power of ten, just move the decimal to the LEFT the number of 0's there are in the power of 10. Answer: 181.98 90,500 divided by 100 - To divide a number by a power of ten, just move the decimal to the LEFT the number of 0's there are in the power of 10. Answer: 905 2 students went on a trip to New York City. 1 of them visited the Statue of Liberty. What fraction of the students visited the Statue of Liberty? - Answer: 1/2 Savannah sold (6) black shirts, (2) white shirts, and (10) blue shirts. Based on her sales, how do you represent how many white shirts out of all the shirts she sold? - This is a fraction representation as they are asking you to represent the PORTION of the overall sales Savannah made for white shirts vs. all. Answer: 2/18 or (simplified which you should always do) 1/9. Savannah sold (6) black shirts, (4) white shirts, and (10) blue shirts. Based on her sales, what prediction would you make regarding her sales of white shirts if she sold not 18 total amongst all colors, but 100 next time at market? - This is a fraction problem. In her first sales she sold 4/20 or 1/5 (simplified) white to all shirts. To extrapolate this to not 20 total shirts sold but 100, you have to multiple 1/5 x 100 which is equal to 100 / 5 or (solving for the improper fraction) 20. Answer: 20 Xavier spent less than 2/5 of an hour walking home from school. What fraction is less then 2/5? 5/7 3/4 5/10 2/9 - This is a fraction COMPARISON problem. You have to convert all to have common denominators until you find the one that is less than 2/5. You could also convert all to decimal and compare that way. If you try to compare without doing one of the above, you will be WRONG. Answer: 2/9 What is the MODE in the following series of numbers? 3 7 11 6 2 1 10 1 8 2 - Mode is the number with the highest frequency of repeat in a series. If there is no mode (no one number repeats any more than any other) then there is NO ANSWER for the question (i.e. none). Answer: 1 is the mode What is the MODE in the following series? 4 3 7 10 6 2 9 - Mode is the number with the highest frequency of repeat in a series. If there is no mode (no one number repeats any more than any other) then there is NO ANSWER for the question (i.e. none). Answer: There is no mode as none repeat more than the others. A group of 100 dentists were asked which brand of toothpaste they would recommend. Results: Brand M = 40 Brand P = 24 Brand Q = 20 Brand T = 16 They will ask another 25 dentists next week to recommend a brand of toothpaste. What is the most reasonable prediction of the number of dentists that will recommend brand T? - This is a fraction comparison problem. You have to first find the fraction in the original 100 that recommended Brand T. Then you have to multiply that fraction against the new number of dentists that they will ask (25 dentists in this case). Answer: STEP 1: 16/100 were asked originally and recommended brand T. Simplified (always simplify!) that would be 4/25. STEP 2: You then have to multiply 4/25 x 25 or 4/25 x 25/1 = 100/25 or is = 4. Answer = 4 dentists out of 25 would be expected to answer with brand T as their recommendation. Draw out a clock that shows 5:00pm. - Answer: Draw a clock that shows 7:00am - Answer Jackson sold towels at the beach. If he sold 7 out of every 9 towels he had, which statement could be true? A) out of 27 towels he sold 21 B) out of 18 towels, he sold 7 C) out of 36 towels he sold 35 D) out of 72 towels he sold 63 - This is a fraction problem! 7 out of every 9 towels he had were sold so you have to see which of the answers are equivalent to 7/9. Answer: The answer is A, 21/27 or (simplified!) 7/9. The others do not equal or simplify down to 7/9. The distance between two houses is 921/1000 kilometers. What decimal is equivalent to this distance? - This is a conversion of fraction to decimal problem! To convert a fraction you have to divide the numerator (top) by the denominator (bottom) or 921 divided by 100
