Neurotransmitters carry chemical signals from one neuron to another weather that be
another nerve cell, muscle, or gland these messages help you move and feel your
environment, your nervous system also sends and receives electrical signals from cells all
over the human body from the peripheral nervous system to the central nervous system.
(The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy, 2022)
Dopamine this hormone is made in the adrenal gland and released in our brains. The
hormone plays a role in many body functions including, movement, memory, mood, and
many more. Like anything there can be imbalances which can cause high and low levels of
dopamine, Levels of dopamine is also linked with Schizophrenia, having too much in one
place all at once can cause hallucinations and delusions for an individual. (Ayano G 2016)
Serotonin influences happiness, having low levels of serotonin can cause mental health
disorders like depression and anxiety, antidepressants can block the absorption and recycle
serotonin which allows more of the hormone to be released in the brain helping maintain a
healthy balance. (Bakshi A 2022)
Adrenaline it’s the ‘fight or flight’ response to danger or stress. Low or high blood pressure
can be a result in high or low levels of adrenaline which could cause a heart attack or stroke
due to the pressure or irregular rhythm of the heart.
GABA is a chemical in the brain which reduces signals as it plays a role in how individuals
experience anxiety, stress, and fear so it can block the nerve signals in the brain which can
reduce the feeling of anxiety. (Pugle M 2022)
The behaviour Bob displayed could indicate that he lacked GABA which could explain why
his behavioural inhibition was reduced due to his childhood experiences. This could be due
to the experiences he faced as a child and the trauma of sexual abuse Bob had, the
traumatic experiences in Bob’s childhood may have alter the release of neurotransmitters
due to an over load of stress and fear. As we know stress can affect the body and our
behaviour in many ways as well as emotions which may have been a reason Bob’s behaved
the way he did due to the lack of stable GABA chemicals.
