AC 1.1- Evaluate the effectiveness of the roles of personnel
involved in a crime investigation. [10 marks]
CRIME SCENEC INESVESTIGATORS
CSI are not police officers, they are support staff: civilians who are employed
by police forces. They examine crime scenes to gather forensic evidence that
will ultimately lead to the detection and prosecution of criminals, making sure
the evidence is not contaminated or else it will be inadmissible in court. Their
typical work consists of- keeping a record of all things at a crime scene/ keep a
written record. Looking for trace evidence, taking photographs, and have to
produce statements.
CSI can be beneficial as they are 24 hours a day, allowing them to reach a
crime as soon as possible, rather than waiting where the evidence could
become contaminated. On the other hand, they only earn up to £35,000 per
annum. Senior investigators however are paid £40,000 per annum. However,
considering senior investigators CSI are only earning an extra 5,000, this might
demotivate them causing them to leave or look for better paying jobs with
their science-based degrees. They share the same issue with police. Budget
cuts have led to different areas getting different amounts of funding meaning
some may have more or less CSI in the area. Their salary is publicly funded, via
taxation. The government could cut taxation causing problems for their
salaries, as they might start earning less in response to the tax cuts.
Kercher, a 21-year-old student from Coulsdon, Surrey, was killed in her home
in the university town of Perugia in November 2007. Her body was discovered
in her bedroom, partially undressed, and stabbed many times. She had
also been sexually assaulted. CSI who collected the genetic evidence used to
convict Amanda Knox of the murder, made glaring errors, including using a
dirty glove and not wearing caps. Considering these CSI are experts, it could be
argued as to why they had made such a careless mistake and lacked expertise.
FORENSIC SCIENTISTS
Forensic scientists employ their scientific knowledge and expertise and
evaluate evidence from a crime scene and prepare information for a court.
Their work can involve- collecting trace evidence from scenes of
crime/accidents. Analysing samples of DNA and drugs in the laboratory. The
