TITLE-EXPLANATION:
In this part of the series “Lord of the Rings” the book is about a whole journey full of
adventures to destroy a very powerfull ring of the evil ruler named Sauron. There is a whole Fellowship chosen
so that the ring can be destroyed. That is why the book is named “The Lord Of The Rings, The Fellowship Of The
Ring”.
SETTING & TIME:
It is a science fiction book, so there is not a specific time or place where the story can be related to, but
everything in the story sounds pretty old, so I think that the writer tried to let it look like the story is written in
the Middle Ages. The story starts in the Shire, this is the living area of the Hobbits, another important place is
Rivendell this is where the elves live and where the Fellowship got together. The characters are travelling the
whole story so there isn’t a specific place where they were the whole time.
MAIN CHARACTER(S):
● Sauron: A black big creature who doesn’t exist in real life, so only in a story. The one who made the ring.
He was the villain of the story, because he wanted all the power that he could have through a ring. After
his death, his spirit continued to want the ring for power.
● Saruman: A wizard with long grey hair and long grey beard. He created a whole new army to get the
ring in his hands. An army that is so strong, that even the elves (who are the strongest in the story), can’t
kill them. He definitely changed, first he was part of the good guys and then he turned into a villain.
● Gandalf: A pretty powerful wizard, with long grey hair and a long grey beard just like Saruman. Gandalf
was the good guy and wanted to get rid of the ring, because he knew that if the ring wouldn’t get
destroyed, that Saruman would get the ring in his hands.
● Frodo: Is a Hobbit, so he is really small with big hairy feet. The whole Fellowship is about protecting
Frodo, so that he can destroy the ring safely. He went through a lot in the story. He definitely changes, at
the beginning of the story you could call him a child, later on in the story he got so much responsibilities.
He as a little boy had to destroy a ring, that could get in hands of a strong villain, who could easily kill
him.
PLOT & STRUCTURE:
The best moment of the story was when Frodo didn’t die when he got stung by the Witch-King with the Morgul
Blade. He just got weaker and weaker in the story, the writer of the story really tries to let you get attached to
Frodo, so that whenever something happens to him you will not want to stop reading.
NARRATIVE TECHNIQUE:
Third person, indirect narration, reported speech and past tense… example of a phrase in this book where you
can see these narrative techniques: Frodo Baggins knew the Ringwraiths were searching for him-and the Ring of
Power he bore that would enable Sauron to destroy all that was good in Middle Earth.
