You are working as a final year apprentice in the machine
shop of a medium sized engineering company. Your
supervisor is pleased with your work and your ability to
operate machinery to carry out secondary machining
processes.
Vocational Scenario or Your supervisor would now like you to produce a reflective
Context report, based on what happened when you set-up and
carried out the secondary machining processes, in which you
identify what went well, what could have gone better and
what you can take forward to the next stage of your
development as an engineer.

You have been asked to review and reflect on the practical
activities you carried out when setting-up and using
secondary machining processes to manufacture a
component. You now need to produce a report that considers
the ‘lessons learnt’ during the activities.

Task 1 To do this:
You will need to collate your evidence from Assignment 2.
You should then review and reflect on the activities that you
completed and behaviours that you showed when setting-up
and using secondary machining processes to produce a
component.

, You will then:
Prepare a report that evaluates the lessons learnt from using
secondary machining processes - include:
• what went well;
• what could be done differently next time; and
• a conclusion on what improvements could be made,
with particular reference to the set up and use of
traditional secondary machining processes and to
relevant behaviours

Your report should cover the following:
• The actions taken to manage health and safety in the
workplace with an analysis of how successfully they
were applied; for example, what personal protective
equipment was used and whether any unforeseen
issues occurred and were dealt with
• The traditional secondary machining skills that were
used with an analysis of how successfully they were
applied; for example, how the intended surface
texture/dimensional accuracy was achieved, how
holes were centred accurately and how set-up and
use of the machining processes and equipment could
be altered to make manufacture of the components
more efficient, accurate and/or sustainable
• The general engineering skills that were used with an
analysis of how successfully they were applied; for
example, interpreting drawings and recognising
technical parts of machines
• The relevant behaviours that were used, with an
analysis of how successfully they were applied; for
example, good communication and problem solving
resulting in a worn tool being replaced and an activity
running smoothly, or how taking initiative and
responsibility for their own actions, such as when
setting and adjusting the machines, shows
independence and professionalism.

Checklist of evidence A report attached to the portfolio from Assignment 2 that
required reviews the processes used and reflects on own
performance.
Criteria covered by this task:
Unit/Criteria
To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:
reference
41/D.D3 Demonstrate consistently good technical understanding and analysis of
traditional secondary machining processes, including the application of
relevant behaviours and general engineering skills to a professional
standard
41/D.M4 Recommend improvements to the set up and use of traditional
secondary machining processes and to the relevant behaviours applied

, Review and reflection on secondary machining processes and
personal performance
During the Production and manufacturing of the Mounting flange we decided to use two
different machines to achieve the best surface finish possible and achieve the desired
tolerances and make the process faster.
We used the Centre lathe machine to Remove/ reduce the outer diameter of the workpiece
and also to drill the 30-diameter hole in the centre of the mounting flange. But before we
could begin the manufacturing process, we had to carry out a pre use checklist in which we
checked the floor area, and we inspected the machine for any cracks or damages then we
tested the safety mechanisms of the machine. This consists of checking the machine guard
works properly, the foot brake works properly and does not get jammed after one use as
this is a common issue, we also had to test the on and off switches and the emergency stop
button that they function as desired and as intended. For further health and safety
information’s scroll down to the regulations section.
The One of the machines is a vertical milling machine on which we drilled the 8 mm
diameter holes, however before we could use the machine, we had to carry out the pre use
check which I have carried very successfully and effectively. The Pre use check for the
vertical milling machine consists of checking the floor and the area around the machine for
oil spills or trip and slip hazards, then we had to make sure that all the safety systems work
as desired such as the interlocking switch key is not bent or damaged, the emergency stop
buttons forks we check this by pressing the emergency stop button then trying to turn the
milling machine on. We also had to take into considerations the regulations set out by the
company and by the government, these are a few regulations we had to follow.

Actions taken to manage Health and Safety:
• Before we got into the workshop, we had to make sure we had safety goggles on to
keep our eyes protected and we had to follow the workshop rules that we must only
walk on the designated walkway which was between the yellow lines at all times.
There are many PPE (mandatory) signs in the workshop to make sure that you have
the right PPE on. Also, we must follow the Regulations Set out by the government to
make our working environment safe these regulations can include COSHH regulation,
PPE regulation and Manual handling regulation these are all very important and we
must follow them and remind people about them by having White boards with the
information’s on so the employees will remember what they can and can’t do.
