,Summary
In 2015, the Dutch government reformed the Long-Term Care (LTC) system to control the rising costs
due to an aging population. As a result, it is expected that 2.5 million elderly of 65+ will be living
independently at home in 2040. Elderly living independently have a higher chance of being admitted
to the emergency department (ED) than elderly living in a nursing home and one of the main causes
of ED-admissions is fall incidents. This has a negative impact on the self-reliance and dependency of
elderly, making them anxious and creating a high burden on relatives and healthcare.
SeniorSaint is a fall-detection watch and necklace with a purchasing price of €149 and equipped with
a user-friendly design, fall-detection sensor and artificial intelligence (AI) powered speech
recognition and language processing. It aims to stimulate self-reliance and prevention of
complications due to fall incidents by notifying the user's relatives and nearest ED when a hard
impact is detected and providing a GPS-signal. This device aims to relieve some of the burden on
relatives and healthcare workers, by increasing the safety and emergency response for elderly and
reducing their inpatient days, costs and chances of readmission.
SeniorSaint has a competitive advantage by being user-friendly, also enabling the user to make
emergency calls outside of the home, and providing an affordable alternative without high
purchasing prices and monthly fees. To optimize the implementation, SeniorSaint will be piloted in
the specific niche of elderly of 65+ living independently in the Netherlands, in which relatives,
healthcare workers and healthcare insurers as secondary and tertiary users are also involved.
Through this, user-participation and -empowerment are encouraged, which leads to the co-creation
of a user-centered innovative health technology. Ultimately, SeniorSaint can increase the
self-reliance, feeling of safety and quality of life of independently living elderly.
