Assignment 2 – Eiffel Tower Paris
The Eiffel Tower, known by many is one of the most famous and visited monument in
the world. Every year it attracts around seven million people.1 Tour Eiffel, how it is
pronounced in France, is located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It is a
wrought iron lattice tower designed by the engineer Gustave Eiffel, his company
designed and built the tower in 1889.2 It took twenty-two months to complete the
Eiffel Tower.3 The Eiffel Tower was constructed with the intent to function as the
entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair. However, France also wanted to show the world
their dominance in the industrial and technological domain.4 What better occasion
could you think of to showcase this than on the 100th anniversary of the French
revolution? 5 The opening of the tower to the public was at the same day as the
World Fair. The Eiffel tower was the first ever tower that reached the Hight of 300
meters.6 This incredible masterpiece remained the highest building worldwide till the
Empire State Building dethroned it.7 There was some controversy over the tower,
France’s leading artists and intellectuals criticized it for its design.8 Luckily, they didn’t
listen to this because the tower became a worldwide cultural success, charming
people all over the world.
The tower has three levels that are open for visitors to explore, consisting of
restaurants located on the first and second levels. The highest observation deck
accessible to the public in the European Union is situated on the upper platform of
the top level, standing at 276 meters (906 feet) above the ground. Visitors can buy
tickets to go up either by stairs or by lift (elevator) to reach the first and second levels.
The climb from ground level to the first level consists of over 300 steps, as does the
