I actually don't know if this is going to be a sad, love full or a dirty story.
In my eyes the title of the book makes sense in the first chapter, because they talk about wat they
carried with them during the war.
I think this book is really touching, because someone died already in the first chapter in a cruel way.
Why does the writer let you know how much of the war equipment is?
There are so many details in the book, for example about a dead 15/16 year old boy with flies in his
mouth and eyes, gross.
Page 19 - they talk about how the soldiers carried sickness. They don’t carry only supplies, but also
the fear of death and other things in their head and body. I have a sad feeling about that.
What does ambiguity mean?
Why does the lieutenant hate Marta immediately?
Does every soldier love Martha?
What does AWOL mean?
Do Rucksack and backpack mean the same thing?
I find it hard to read and to follow the storyline of the book.
Forty-three years old, and the war occurred half a lifetime ago, and yet the remembering
makes it now. And sometimes remembering will lead to a story, which makes it forever. That's
what stories are for. Stories are for joining the past to the future. Stories are for those late
hours in the night when you can't remember how you got from where you were to where you
are. Stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember
except the story.
This part really set me thinking about stories we all tell to just let the past of our lives know to each
other. This part let me see how important it is to tell our stories to let the generations after us know
how it went in the war and that we have so much luck we don’t have to go through that.
The part where he talks about his job as a meat packer was very weird and random, I didn't
understand why that was important to tell. Like he had nothing else to tell.
Why does O’brien actually run from and did he actually had pain in his chest or is that just to show
that he had a feeling to leave?
I think that the man where O'Brien can stay for a few days is very sweet and mysterious.
Why does O’brien want to go to Canada so quickly?
I find the last part of the rainy river a powerful piece. That is because the emotions are told in detail
and I sympathize with him. I also feel sorry for the old man who helped O'Brien because he crossed
that water for nothing. I do not understand why O'Brien wanted to leave so badly and then fight in the
war.

Er zijn 2 mannen die vechten omdat de ene een mes heeft gestolen van de ander. De ene brak de
ander zijn neus, en daarna zijn eigen neus omdat hij zich schuldig voelde. Hij kwam erachter dat de
enige enemy die hij heeft zichzelf is.

, Ze worden goede vrienden en sluiten een deal dat als er iemand van de 2 gewond raakt dat de vriend
de ene die gewond raakt dood moet maken. Maar Strunk wil niet sterven, en hij vraagt zijn vriend om
hem niet te vermoorden. Maar de vriend heeft hem uiteindelijk toch gedood omdat hij het pact moest
volgen. Strunk overlijdt en Jensen heeft een soort opluchting gevoel omdat hij zich heeft gehouden
aan het pact. De dood heeft hem geholpen.

situation going on with that JOJO.

wel iemand vermoordt en dat is altijd erg. Het heeft geen moraal. In dit boek kan je niet lezen wie
goed en slecht is, omdat dat er niet is in een oorlog.
‘’In many cases a true war story cannot be believed If you believe it, it be sceptical.’’
In Vietnam waren er overal drugs, iedereen was altijd high van de drugs, maar dat helpt niet als je
geluid hoort midden in de nacht en je weet niet waar het vandaan komt. Dit is wat er gebeurt in dit
hoofdstuk.

I think Mary Anne is so lost from herself that she wants to kill everyone?
Mary Anne is the girlfriend of Feesie. She transformed. Ze wilde niet weg want het leven in Amerika is
niet echt heel leuk, maar om daar te zijn en om weer een doel te hebben van het leven doet haar veel
goeds. She wants to live her life. Being able to live in a way. All those people that come back from war
have problems with having a civilian again. Life has a meaning when fighting in a war. Ze weten niet
of ze terug is gegaan naar Amerika of ergens anders heen gegaan. Ze heeft een ketting van tongen
van mensen omdat ze one of the boys was, she was one of them so she wears the tongues like a
trofee. She was one of the Greenies (Green berets), the tuff guys, the snipers, they did the ruff work.
The greenies had a special status, they were allowed to do more things under the radar for example.
Stockings
I think it is really sad that Henry Dobbins had the pantyhose from his girlfriend for good luck, but then
he gets a letter from his girlfriend that she is breaking up with him. Henry Dobbins still believes in the
magic from his ex-girlfriend's pantyhose.
