, Chapter 1: Introduction
Healthcare systems are subject to 4 inexorable and challenging social trends:
- The demographic shift
- The pace of technological innovation
- Changing user and consumer expectations
- Financial pressures within a context of global economic recession
The demographic shift: The demographic challenge is that people live longer so the number
of elderly rising fast. So the healthcare costs are rising. And the rising incidence of chronic
health conditions in the developed countries.
The pace of technological innovation: The pace of innovations makes sure that we find new
or more effective cures for diseases. And makes it possible to tailor the treatments to the
individual.
Changing user and consumer expectations: People want more from the health services than
their parents did. They are not content to be passive recipients of health care. They are
better informed and expect more from the health care services.
Financial pressures within a context of global economic recession: Rising costs have
influenced the constant pressure for more health care spending. And it never seems to be
enough.
- Health care organizations lack clear hierarchical structures for control and demand.
- Health care consumption is different from consuming other goods: Huge asymmetry
in power and information between patient and doctor.
- When people use health care they are at their most vulnerable
Health care is often an unmanaged process and undocumented process. It is a process
which is tailored to the needs of the patient.
Health care organizations have a sense of a social mission to act in the best interest of the
people and pursue the best interest of the patients even though it might not be business
efficient.
