As American society grappled and adjusted to the change in normalcy global pandemic Covid-19 curated, the African American community was also reeling from immense viral footage and coverage of slayings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd.

Incorporate a historical and cultural tradition commonly referred to as “othermothering” when working with African American students. The practice of othermothering is a cultural tradition in the African American community, utilized during slavery and continues presently in neighborhoods, faith communities, community organizations, and educational institutions. There are several definitions of othermothering.

Slaves were transported as labor and not treated as humans with equal rights and freedoms as were those of European descent. Throughout this document, the terms African American and Black will be used interchangeably to better capture the diverse definitions of African descendants. Slaves were forced to live together in deplorable conditions. African men and women were forced to live, work, and procreate with one another to maintain the labor needs of the European slave owners.
