Modern Analytical Techniques Infrared (IR) spectroscopy
Identification of unknown compounds is incredibly important, particularly in the field of forensic science. However, as molecules are incredibly small, we cannot see them and therefore cannot identify them visually. So, how can we figure out which molecule a pure sample of an unknown organic compound contains? Although we cannot see molecules, we can make inferences based on how they behave. One method is call infrared spectroscopy (IR).
