According to Henderson's theory, a patient's ability to make decisions for himself is crucial to their ability to stay healthy after being discharged from the hospital. According to Henderson, a nurse's job can be substituted for, supplemental, or complimentary, depending on whether the patient is being assisted or encouraged to take action. The nurse's job is to assist the patient in reclaiming their identity as a person.
