NUR-631 Topic 4 Assignment Case Study 2023 – Grand Canyon University. Mr. Davis is 56-year-old male who has a past medical history of HTN (hypertension). Every Sunday, he goes to his favorite restaurant to watch sports with his friends. While making several trips to the restroom over in 1 hour, Mr. Davis complains of feeling tired and weak. He starts sweating profusely, his breathing becomes rapid and deep, his speech is slurred, and eventually he passes out. His friends call 911, and Mr. Davis is transported to the hospital” (Grand Canyon University, n.d). After close examination of this case study, we will be able to asses Mr. Davis’s acid-base disturbance. The role excessive alcohol consumption plays, identify electrolyte imbalances, and how the respiratory and renal compensation occurs as a result of these imbalances. Based on the case study Mr. Davis has low glucose, positive ketones, and proteins in his urine we will be discussing the rationale behind these symptoms. Acid-Base Disturbance Mr. Davis is suffering from metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis is categorized as a reduction in bicarbonate concentration and decrease in blood pH (Kraut & Madias, 2010). Mr. Davis’s current arterial blood gases reveal pH of 7.15, pCO2 30, and HCO3 of 16. His pCO2 is low because his body is trying to compensate for his metabolic imbalance. The respiratory system will try to compensate as the pH decreases by signaling the body to hyperventilate therefore reducing the PaCO2. In Mr. Davis’s case, acidosis is extreme. His buffering system is depleted and can no longer compensate for the increase of H+ ions. Other signs that indicate his condition are exhibited in his rapid breathing and slurred speech (McCance, Huether, Brashers, & Rote, 2014). One consideration for Mr. Davis’s metabolic acidosis could be excessive alcohol consumption.
