EAS Exam 1 Review Question and answer rated A+ 2023What is remote sensing? What has been the role of remote sensing in the emergence of Earth system science as a discipline? The scanning of the earth by satellite or high-flying aircraft in order to obtain information about it. What consequences arise from the fact that Earth is a closed system? Cannot exchange matter. Why are isolated systems conceptual-- not real? Isolated systems are not perfect as the universe of course is an another approximation of an isolated system. So, practically it is impossible to make 100% isolated system. What are the differences between closed and open systems? Open system both matter and energy are exchanged. Closed system only energy is exchanged. What is the difference between a geostationary satellite and a polar-orbiting satellite? The uses and applications of high-altitude satellites such as GOES differ substantially from the applications of lower altitude satellites like Landsat and SPOT. In what ways do they differ? (GOES) A Geostationary Satellite is used to provide visible and infrared images of Earth's surface and atmosphere. (SPOT) A Low Orbit Satellites are used mainly for data communication such as email, video conferencing and paging. What is a model? How are models used in the study of the natural world? To visualize a type of system to better understand it, for an example, a computer simulations. What does it mean when we say that a system or a reservoir is at "steady state"? Relate the concept of steady state to the definition of "flux." One of the most significant properties that is constant in a steady-state flow system is the system mass flow rate. Flux: the action or process of flowing or flowing out. Steady State = Rate of flux is constant. What is residence time, and what factors control the residence time of a material in a particular reservoir? Residence time: How much time a substance is in a given location. Conduction, Convection, Radiation. Conduction: Energy is directly transferred e.g, hot pot handle. Convection: Energy transferred by mass motion
