MRI Questions and Answers 2023 Slide 2-History of MRIs The first original device was created in 1945 when two groups of scientists led by Felix Bloch and Edward Purcell developed NMR systems otherwise known as nuclear magnetic resonance. In 1973, an imaging method using NMR systems provided the first magnetic resonance image or MRI. The most notable improvement since these images were created would be the development of being able to look at the images in a three dimensional perspective. Slide 3-What is an MRI Magnetic resonance imaging, otherwise known as MRI, is a technique using magnetic field and radio waves to create thorough images of body structures such as organs and tissues in the human body. Slide 4-Picture This machine is a MR750w GEM MRI-which is the manufacturer I mentioned in my research paper. These machines magnetic and clearly tube like. Before a person comes into this room, they are instructed to take off all metal or else it would obscure the images being taken. I had a top on and it had these metal lines on the top, and the doctors thought something was wrong, so before going into these machines, it is important to take off anything metal. After that, the person is instructed to lie down right here and stay very still. If movement occurs, it could blur the images. Slide 5-Prepping for an MRI Besides taking off anything metal from the body, there really isn't anything else to do to prepare. However, even though this is rare, a sedative may be permitted to calm down patients who are very sensitive to claustrophobia. Headphones are also allowed to calm the patients as well. Slide 6-What is an MRI made up of? The functioning parts of a MRI involves a magnet, gradient coils, RF equipment, and a computer. The magnet has to be able to penetrate through parts of the body. Four magnets are placed perpendicular to each other to produce a consistent magnetic field used during the process of making images. The gradient coils provide data and are wrapped around the cylinder that encircles the patient. They are used to absorb radiation and give off a signal. The computer receives and controls these signals and is first translated through an analog-digital convertor. Slide 7-What happens during and MRI? How does it work? The patient lies down in the tube like machine and while the person is lying down, radio waves are directed at him or her. It pulses radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body. This process of taking these images lasts from 15 minutes to an hour Slide 8-What's going on behind the scenes? The computer used to run the MRI is in a separate room to keep it away from the magnetic field generated by the scanner. The radiographer, a person who is trained to interpret and analyse x-rays and scans, is the one who is in control of the computer running the MRI. The radiographer and the patient are able to speak with each other through an intercom if anything is needed. Slide 9-Enhancers If something is needed to be seen more clearly and in more detail, the patient may be injected with a dye. This dye enhances certain tissues and blood vessels to show up more clearly. An example of these dyes used as a contrasting agent would be gadolinium. Slide 10-What does it do for people's health? MRIs play a pivotal role in detecting cancer; it can locate cancerous tumorous. It also gives early warning to advancing coronary disease. Also, the MRI is used to give people knowledge on the brain; it records the metabolic change that occurs within the human brain. Determining the brain's anatomy, this helps see which parts of the brain could be under stress and are dealing with critical conditions. MRI can be used to detect brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, stroke, dementia, infection, and the causes of headache. Basically anything wrong is seen clearly and thoroughly through these images Slide 11-Results of MRI MRI results are difficult to interpret, being they are often expressed in a combination of Greek and Latin. The results being in another language leads most physicians to explain and talk about the results with their patients rather than just handing them the results. There are 6 different types of MRI images: Sagittal T1, Axial T1, Axial T1 with contrast, Axial T2, Coronal FLAIR, Axial DWI. Each type has a different view on the area being focused on and have different purposes. Slide 12-My opinion on MRIs Honestly I am so confident in this product. However, it is more prominent in wealthier countries because this expensive equipment. Its takes a lot of upkeep. A lot of electricity. A staril place and thats just available everywhere. I'm sure a lot of you have had MRI's. My story-I had nerve condition in my foot called RSD-say it out. And by taking the MRI, the results show that I needed some sort of blockage to block the pain out. Although that didnt work specifically for me, it does for a lot of people, and my mri results guided me to different options I could take possibly take towards my future.
