Kines 100 Test Questions With 100% Correct Answers What two methods of progression were discussed in class and why were these promoted as being better than a strictly linear progression model? - Answer -Sawtooth Method Stairstep Method These are both better because they allow times for active periods of rest and adaptation. How soon in detraining/inactivity/down time has reversibility been shown to occur (probably in highly trained individuals)? - Answer -2 Weeks for most but 48 hours for highly trained How many days is suggested for moderately fit and active individuals to maintain fitness? Increase fitness? - Answer -Aeorobic - 3 days per week Resistence - once or twice per week. How does aerobic training and resistance training differ in this regard? - Answer -Aerobic training degrades much more quickly. What are some items to consider regarding individuality and training program selection and/or adaptation to training? - Answer --Each person responds differently -large differences in ability to improve fitness -Genetics, age, initial fitness levels, and other factors all go into determining individual impacts from training. To determine fitness improvements to whom should we compare ourselves?, - Answer -Ourselves Why is this often a difficult thing to do? - Answer -Yes because we do not know who we were 6 weeks ago. What is metabolism? - Answer -The sum of all chemical processes necessary to maintain the body. Efficiency at which your body uses energy is the metabolic rate. What is the chemical equation for the production of ATP and why is this a circular equation? - Answer -ATP = ADP + P + Energy (This is when you go from chemical to mechanical energy) ADP + P + Energy = ATP (This is when your body uses food to put muscle back together) Ongoing cycle because as we use up ATP we need to replenish it as well. When we breakdown foodstuffs which ones are broken down to form the refined energy (what are the energy nutrients)?, - Answer -Carbs, Fats, and Proteins What are the basic components of the cell and what are their responsibilities? - Answer -Cell membrane - Protective Barrier and Selective Permeability Cytoplasm - Gives cell shape and where ATP synthesis begins Nucleus - Command center, also determines protein regulation Mitochondria - Power plant of the cell, location of majority of ATP synthesis, aerobic metabolism, and aerobic enzymes located here. What is selective permeability? - Answer -The cellular membrane only lets through what it needs for ATP synthesis. What are the three systems which are available for ATP synthesis? - Answer -Immediate energy system (ATP-PC) Non Oxidative Energy system (seperates glucose without oxygen) Oxidative Energy System (seperates glucose with oxygen) What system provides us with our greatest work rate capability? - Answer -immediate energy system Which system benefits from the use of creatine supplementation? - Answer -The immediate energy system Heart What morphological changes take place in the heart due to chronic aerobic training? - Answer -Your left ventricle size increases and you pump out more blood per beat which means the stroke volume increases. What differences would you expect to see in the methods of achieving cardiac output between an aerobically fit and a sedentary individual? - Answer -An aerobically fit individual would have less beats per minute at the same activity level than another individual even at the same work rate level because they pump out more blood and have a higher stroke volume. How does HR and SV differ in response to exercise? Why? - Answer -As your HR increases SV decreases because there is less blood to pump out from the heart. The book provides a nice overview of the heart's contribution and I would encourage you to look over this discussion. It talks about the heart as a dual pump and it discusses circulation of blood.
