Transformational Leadership in Industrial and Organizational Psychology
Leadership is a critical factor in the success of organizations. It plays a pivotal role in
influencing the behavior, attitudes, and performance of individuals and groups within an
organization. Leadership: A critical review and guide said that leadership goes beyond the self-
interest of the leader. In terms of an organization, this may include relationships with those who
are led as well as those who input into the system such as suppliers and those who receive
outputs from the system like customers and clients. These relationships place demands on leaders
who are generally expected to be transparent, act with integrity and to demonstrate trust.
Leadership is viewed as an on-going journey rather than a final destination. (pp. 2-4) Within
leadership, there are multiple types of leadership styles. Among the various leadership styles and
approaches, transformational leadership stands out as the most prominent.
Transformational leadership is a well-known paradigm within leadership literature that
has its own set of characteristics and principles. Transformational leadership theory was first
introduced by James MacGregor Burns in 1978. Burns argued that transformational leaders
should inspire and motivate their followers for extraordinary achievement outcomes by
appealing to their values and higher-order needs. The theory has since evolved, with
contributions in 1985 from Bernard Bass, who expanded on the concept and developed tools for
measuring transformational leadership (Gaston, D. W., 2021). Transformational leadership
ultimately is used to inspire and motivate employees so that it positively affects them, which
ends up positively affecting the customers or clients. Transformational leadership encourages
employees to develop themselves and achieve targets that align with the company's vision and
mission (Parulian & Sawitri, 2023).
