large / fearsome. The addition of "but less timid" is a playful idea: a gorilla
doesnt necessarily cojure up a picture of a shy / retiring creature. Some might
acknowledge the timid nature of animals around humans: the fact that the cop
is less timid might signal that he is fearsome and fearless.


With two hieroglyths in his face that mean trouble - correct answer
✔METAPHOR- The comparison of the cops eyes (or reflection off his
sunglasses) to hieroglyths continues the impression of his though exterior: the
eyes are the windows to the soul and the cops eyes are mysterious / hard to
decipher. He is a difficult man to read. This links with the themes of violence /
savagery: the cop seems to have no humanity / discernable emotion. The line
seems somewhat ambiguous, but 'that mean trouble' hints at the delicate
balance developed later in the stanza: does the cop represent order and

this morning when he said "see you babe" to his wife he hoped it, he truly
hoped it - correct answer ✔REPITITION- 'hoped' reveals the cops feelings
(his humanity that seemed obscured by the hieroglyphs) though the clichéd
use of 'babe' seems simplistic, this reputation of 'hoped' emphasizes the
genuine (though perhaps rudimentary) emotion behind it. The cop and his wife
are deliberately nameless. The cop himself is a fairly emotionless caricature. It
is ironic that 'pheobe' and 'louie' are the first names in the poem and identify
businesses rather than people.
