• The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood vessels,
and blood.
Functions:
• The primary function of this system is to transport material to
and from all parts of the body.
• The heart pressurizes blood and provides the driving force for
its circulation through the blood vessels.
• Substances transported throughout the cardiovascular system
include
• (1) O2 and nutrients
• (2) hormones and antibodies
• (3) heat and CO2.
, Blood Circulation
• One full circulation consists of these two circulations together. Both
circulations start and end in the heart.
• These two circulations are:
• The systemic (or greater or high-pressure)circulation: It starts in the
left ventricle → the aorta → systemic arteries → systemic capillaries
→ systemic veins → superior and inferior vena cava → ends in the
right atrium.
• The pulmonary (or lesser or low-pressure) circulation: It starts in the
right ventricle → the pulmonary trunk → pulmonary arteries →
pulmonary capillaries → pulmonary veins → ends in the left atrium.
