about 10% of social media users are addicted. And one may think that it’s because they may have

nothing to do or they just want to keep in touch with people but that may not be the case. Studies

show that social media releases dopamine which triggers the reward system in the brain, telling

them that social media is the best kind of reward or at least better than what they were doing

before. It is just as dangerous to become addicted to social media as to alcohol or any other

addiction, since it can lead to physical and psychological dependence.

Addiction to social media is a growing trend that is becoming seemingly more common

in recent times. There is growing evidence that shows most individuals that are addicted to social

media tend to grow a dependency on it, which is not unlike an addiction to alcohol or drugs

where they feel the need or itch to go on their phones if they haven't done so in a while. Social

media addiction can be both physical and psychological. Approximately 5 to 10% of Americans

today are considered social media addicts, according to psychologists. The signs of addiction to

time), withdrawal symptoms (i.e., experiencing unpleasant physical and emotional symptoms

when using social media is restricted or stopped), conflict (i.e., interpersonal problems arise as a

result of social media usage), and relapse (when addicted individuals return to excessive social
