training).



William Stokoe - CORRECT ANSWER First one to prove ASL as a "true-biz" language. Wrote the first ASL
dictionary based on 3 categories (handshape, location, movement). "Father of Linguistics". Taught at
Gallaudet as an English teacher.



Thomas Gallaudet - CORRECT ANSWER Neighbor was Alice Cogswell, a young Deaf girl. He was
motivated to find a way to teach her and "bring her to God". Went to France to find a way to teach her,
found one school that was very secretive and wouldn't let him use their methods, found another place
that taught the deaf (met abbe de siccard/jean massieu/Laurent Clerc). Clerc taught him sign language
and then together they came back to the states and started the first Deaf school in America. Located in
Hartford Connecticut in 1817.
