P1: Explain the impact of computer games on society
Concerns:
Excess playing time
Excess playing time happens when the gamers sit down for hours and stay at the screen without
making any major movement. This is very unhealthy because there will be a lot of pressure on eyes as
well as they are wasting time a lot of time by playing game for hours when they can be working on a
lot of work. It can disturb work and personal life as well as the gamers educations. The maximum
hours recommended to play game is limited to 2 to 3 hours a day however today’s generation tends
to ignore these and play games for over 5 to 6 hours or sometimes even as long as the full day.

Social isolation
Social isolation means that someone isn’t meeting or socialising with other people in real life. Social
isolation tends to be very common in the ages of 12 to 21 as young people have more time for studies
that they can choose to simply spend on playing games. Elder people also have a high chance on
getting isolated from the real world but there are a number of facts that can make to avoid them
from doing so by working. It is true that people can meet with other people in online games but
however it is clearly not the same as you going out to meet with people such as close friend to
perhaps have some good times together.

Cost
Gaming can be a costly hobby or a lifestyle for more addictive gamers. Bigger and average titles tend
to cost between £30 to £60 and these are only games. Some games may also feature in game
purchases meaning that additional money can be spent on different maps, features and more. These
extra functionalities can go from as low as £1 up to £200 or more. People sometimes cannot afford to
buy be good titles but sometimes they can take risk of buying them anyway, not thinking about the
debts and other trouble they can get into because they are so addicted to the game that they cannot
stop themselves.

Separation from reality
There’s no problem to have a fun side of life and some relaxed time with games but however some
people take it on a whole new level by not connecting back to the real world. It can cause a lot of
problems in the long way and even in short-term on a person’s life. They can feel stressed or feel
bullied as well as they can be very shy when interacting with real life people because they have been
always locked in the room playing game that they do not meet people outside. This can also affect
the so-called gamers life in a really bad that they could require a psychologist in future.

Education
Students who tend to be hard-core gamers known as addictive players usually do not focus on their
studies therefore they are more likely to get bad grades that will affect them really badly in the short-
term and also in the long term. Students who spends more time on playing games than studying
usually ends up quite badly. There could be a lot of arguing and misunderstanding between the
teacher and parents because the parents will aspect the child to become smarter since they are going
to school and studying while they are focusing playing games and enjoying the present.

, Benefits:
Hand-eye coordination
Playing many games is not all that bad after all because it could help gamers to have a better hand-
eye coordination that could help them to gain skills that may be required for everyday life. Gamers
who play a lot of games usually know where the keyboard controller buttons exactly are so they do
not have to keep their eyes on it and therefore they can focus on more important things that are
happening on the screen in front of them than watching the controllers. For example, when driving,
the drivers usually do not look at the pedals and the gears as they immediately know where each of
those are without the need of looking down so having more chances on crashing into something.

Brain training
Not all games have to be educational in order to make players smarter because games include
realistic physics of real-life stories that are being presented realistically inside of games that can
make gamers learn a lot without even realising. A good example of for brain training games are
strategy games, puzzles games and stimulators. A driving stimulator can help gamers learn more
about physics and how a car can handle a different situation in different conditions whereas puzzle
games can help people have better reaction times on key things and have faster solving skills while
strategy games can help people solve things relatively simpler and faster. Strategy games may help
gamers solve real-life business issues as the key point of those games are to use strategy against and
for something or someone.

Thinking and strategy skills
Games makes gamer think more straight forward and gain skills that they would not be able to
perhaps could but much later during their life. Players are able to solve problems much quicker in a
much more efficient way because of games. Tasks could be broken down into little parts and put in
order and then be solved in that order from the most important to least. This can help gamers
manage real life situations and tasks much better.

Future impact
The future impact of gamers playing games for long hours can be bad and good both in short term
and long term. In short term, gamers can gain a lot of skills that could earn by experiencing real life
situations that always turn out well for the gamers however in long term gamers can have eyesight
problem that could affect their life and work. Gamers could either gain weight from sitting too long
eating too much or weaker that they are always playing game and don’t make time to eat. It could
affect their health majorly. Overall, limiting game time can have a positive effect on gamer’s lives as
it will help the, gain a useful and different set of mindset and skills that could use real life situations.

Impact on ‘mainstream’ application development
The mainstream application has developed rapidly in the past few years and it have gotten better
visual experience. The visual experience has got a lot of new features that people could use more
efficiently and it is due to the fact that some functions are available in games as settings or formats,
so these have been implemented for applications too. The applications and games has become easier
as different platform offers many help resources as well as huge communities in forum formats that
offer help for existing beginners and developers.
