Cells and tissues: neural subtype diversity
Learning objectives:

1. Spatial and temporal mechanisms determine the identity of individual stem cells and their progeny

Neurogenesis can be subdivided into four processes- last week lecture

 Neurogenesis
- The growth and developmet of nervous tissue

Two main processes contribute to the generation of neural diversity

 There are 2 main processes that contribute to the generation of neural diversity:

1. Spatial patterning

– looking at whole neuroectroderm, there are different genes expressed in different regions. Because of this
differential gene expression mentioned in the first lecture, these cells will differentiate

 Temporal regulation of formation
 In vertebrates: in some cases the identity of a neuron can be influences
(a) as it migrates to its final position
(b) after innervation of its target tissue

Regional subdivison of ventral neuroectoderm
 During the formation of neuroectoderm, genes are expressed in the neural ectoderm

Each neuroblast expresses a different subset of segment polarity and dorso-ventral patterning genes

 During the formation of neuroectoderm, genes are expressed in the neural ectoderm
 Some of those genes are segment polarity genes
