This report will be looking at the importance of supporting individuals
with additional needs. I will be explaining the diagnostic procedures
used to diagnose and determine the additional needs for Ben and
Rebecca. First, we will talk about diagnostics. Diagnostic procedures are
techniques used to determine a particular medical condition. They are
used in the health and social care sectors to provide data regarding the
patient’s needs. A medical history along with any symptoms or evidence
will be reviewed and the patient will undergo a mental and/or physical
evaluation. The symptoms are any evidence of illness that are then used
to recognise and diagnose conditions. A diagnosis helps determine what
kind of condition the patient may be experiencing. All assessments are
done by trained professionals. In the end, the professionals will be able
to ascertain what individual needs are required and provide holistic care
to the service user. There are many different disability assessments
carried out.
Case study 1 Rebecca Brown-
As a result of a road accident, Rebecca has a fractured spine and no
movement below her cervical spine. Her neighbourhood is very toxic and
makes unpleasant comments whenever she or her family pass them. This
can have a very negative effect on her mental health. She currently could
have self-image problems. She could view herself as “different” from the
others due to her disability. The family can feel unwanted and
discriminated against by the neighbourhood and live in a small hard to
access apartment. Getting a diagnosis for Rebecca can help with her
self-image problems and give her an understanding of her own
condition.
The diagnostic procedures used to diagnose Rebecca include an X-ray
scan, MRI and a CT Scan. These all produce pictures of the insides of her
body. They are more effective than each other but together all the
images are used to draw up a conclusion and diagnosis. An x-ray is
operated by a radiologist or x-ray technologist. It is a procedure that
uses radiation to pass through the body and process images from the
body. These images are then used to examine bones, joints and tissues
and are also able to reveal any spinal column problems, abnormal
masses, changes to the spine. This diagnostic will help the professionals
get an insight into the severity of her condition. An x-ray is not the most
efficient in showing fractures so they would also use a CT scan to create
further detailed images. A radiographer will carry out a CT scan
(computerised tomography). It uses x-rays and a computer to create
elaborate, higher-quality images. It is more efficient than an x-ray
machine. X-rays and CT scans both show bones and fractures within the
spinal column.
To get an even better understanding Rebecca will have to go through an
MRI scan. They use strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce
images. An MRI scan is operated y a radiologist or radiology
