Technological crimes AC1.1

A crime we have covered is technological crimes. This type of crime is also known as
cyber crime which involves internet based fraud, cyber trespassing, identity theft and
downloading illegal materials. Typical victims of this crime is anybody who uses the
internet. The usual offenders are anyone who has knowledge of the internet, anyone
who has technical ability to access people’s bank account and credit card and young
people may be getting involved in order to impress friends. The level of public
awareness of a technological crime is starting to increase however they do not realise
they have become a victim until they have checked their accounts. A popular online
scam is ticket fraud in which a consumer is tricked into buying fake profile events.
Usually they will forge bar codes or they won’t receive their tickets in general. This is a
case in which it could happen to anyone. There are thousands of cases like this every
year. It is clear that this crime is a technological crime as people are constantly
scammed of money. This is seen as a criminal act as it breaks the cyber act and the
Englsih law however, it is seen as deviant as it is not viewed as a real crime.

Technological crimes AC1.2

There are a number of different reasons why technological crime are likely to go under
reported as SOCIAL: there can be a high level of complexity. It could take up a lot of
police budget to track and locate and pick apart the case. They would rather use the
time to focus on other crimes. PERSONAL: Furthermore, people may not realise they
have become a victim as they wouldn’t know if they’ve been hacked or that they have
been tricked into a scam. SOCIAL: Also there is a lack of public concern. This could be
due to the crime being low level or they might just not care if it takes place.
