Wester Fields need to be concerned with the security that protects their customer’s data because if
they don’t, the data they store about people will be more likely to be breached. This results in the
GDPR’s attention, as Wester Fields have not protected the data effectively, and they will fine Wester
Fields a sum of money that could make the company be in a position of debt.
One threat to Wester Fields data would be the staff that are in charge of the data. This is a potential
threat to the data because if the staff are not educated properly on the subject, they could introduce
a virus to the system by plugging in a USB stick with a virus on it. The staff member might not realise
that they have a virus on the USB stick but by the time they do, the data has already been stolen or
corrupted. To avoid this from happening, Wester Fields should train staff on how to protect the
system properly and educate them so they don’t make any mistakes that lead to peoples data being
stolen.
Another threat to Wester fields’ data would be hackers. If the system that stores the data is not
encrypted suitably, it could encourage hackers to breach the system then steal the data. This would
be bad for the company as it would damage their relationship with their customers and they would
be fined for not protecting the data properly. To avoid this, Wester Fields will need to encrypt the
data so the hackers don’t know what the information says but also limit the number of people that
have access to the system so only a few people know the password for the system.
The final threat to Wester Fields data would be entering information incorrectly. If the information
for a customer is wrong it could cause problems, for example if a phone number was inputted
wrongly, they would have no way of contacting them. To avoid this you could ask the customer to
check over their information before submitting it, or get a staff member to check it over before
inputting it into the system. When the information is being inputted into the system, you can add
validation rules to ensure that the information being inputted is correct. For example, if a phone
number was inputted wrongly, you can get the system to check how many numbers I has and if it
doesn’t have enough, it will not add it to the system until it has enough.
