Stress management is a. “set of techniques and programs intended to help people deal more
effectively with stress in their lives by analysing the specific stressors and taking positive actions
to minimize their effects.” (Gale Encyclopaedia of Medicine, 2008).
Causes of work-related stress
Some of the factors that commonly cause work-related stress include:
Insufficient skills for the job
Organisation culture - Long hours,
Bad management practices - Over-supervision, Inadequate
working environment, Lack of proper resources, Heavy workload, Tight deadlines
Job content and demands - Boring work, Lack of autonomy, Job insecurity
Physical work environment – Harassment, Discrimination, Few promotional opportunities, Lack
of equipment
Relationships at work - Poor relationships with colleagues or bosses
Change management, Changes within the organization, Changes to duties
Lack of support
Role conflict
Symptoms of work-related stress
The signs or symptoms of work-related stress can be physical, psychological and behavioural.

Fatigue
Muscular tension
