NEST SMOKE ALARM
Purpose
The smoke alarms purpose it to alarm the people in the house that something is wrong such as if
it’s detected a fire or carbon monoxide.

Appliance
This could be installed in any building such as a personal home or an office building because they
would be able to receive alerts as soon as a problem has been detected. This would be good for
places that are big because it might take a while for someone to notice a problem without some
sort of alert on their phone.

Principles
The Nest smoke alarm is always active and can detect smoke and carbon monoxide. If these are detected, it
will send an alert to the user’s phone to inform them when the problem occurred. It relies on the internet to
be able to send an alert the user’s phone. If the smoke alarm has lost connection to the internet, the smoke
alarm would alert people in the vicinity of the problem. However, if the user is miles away from the house,
they’d have no idea their house is on fire.

Characteristics
The smoke alarm can talk to the user, display different colours to show the severity of the problem, lights up
when you walk under it and sends a notification to the user’s phone to tell them if there’s an issue. The alarm
is battery powered so it doesn’t need to be by a socket in order to function properly. The battery on the smoke
alarm lasts up to five years, so it is very efficient and won’t have to be replaced very often.

Benefits
The benefits of the smoke alarm are that it communicates to the user verbally , has different coloured lights to
communicate a problem, the user gets a notification on their phone when there’s something to report, plus it
can test itself and its batteries on its own. The smoke alarm tests its batteries by sounding the alarm and uses a
microphone to record itself, the recording does not get sent to nest servers. It compares the recorded test to
what a healthy test should sound like and then informs the user accordingly.

Risks
The risks of the smoke alarm are if it loses connection to the phone while the user is out, the user won’t know
there’s a problem also people that are deaf won’t be able to hear the alarm. If someone hacked the alarm,
they could distract the members of the house while the hacker sneaks into the house. A privacy concern is the
alarm has an inbuilt microphone inside it. This is a concern because it could be used to secretly listen to
people’s conversations without them knowing. If the smoke alarm does recorded people without their
consent, they may be fined because of the General Data Protection Regulations.

Conclusion
Overall, I think that it is an upgrade to a standard smoke alarm because instead of sounding an alarm when
you’ve just finished having a shower, it shows lights in stages of severity giving the user chance to think and
assess the situation. Also, the Nest Smoke Alarm is useful to some people because if they have a big house, the
alarm will tell the user if there’s a problem so they can rush to the area and see what’s wrong. Finally, it has
some very handy features such as sending notifications to the phone detailing the issue and what time it was
detected. If something serious happened to the house, this information could be given to the authorities.

AUGUST SMART LOCK
Purpose
The lock is designed to keep a door locked and stop intruders from getting past the door. It is
Wi-Fi enabled so when the lock detects the phone is close to the house, it will automatically
unlock.

, Application
This could be installed in any building such as a personal home or an industrial office building because digital
keys can be given out to trusted people and they can use them to gain access to the doors of the building.

Principles
The August smart lock is constantly monitoring the state in which it’s in such as if it’s locked or not. If it gets
unlock, an alert will be sent to the user’s smartphone telling them when it was unlocked and who unlocked it.
It knows who unlocked it because the owner of the lock gave a certain key to them that identifies them. It
relies on the internet to see which phones have a valid key to unlock the door and to send alerts to the user’s
phone. If the lock has lost connection to the internet, it won’t be able to validate the keys and it’ll be unable to
send alerts to the user’s phone.

Characteristics
The lock can unlock when the person with the phone is close to it, it automatically locks when the door shuts
or after an amount of time, users can give digital keys to whomever they like so they can unlock the door
themselves and it logs what activity has happened, giving the user a timeline of events. The Lock uses four AA
batteries to be able to have enough power to do its job. The battery lasts up to six months which isn’t that
long. The user would have to keep buying batteries for it and remember to replace them, otherwise they might
be unable to use the lock to get into their home.

Benefits
The benefits of the lock are the user gets notifications when the door has been attempted to be unlocked,
locks automatically when the door closes, unlocks when the user’s phone is close to the lock and it logs the
exact time when someone has interacted with the door.

Risks
The risks of the lock are someone that has been given a digital key to the lock could use it for malicious intent
and if the phone is out of power, the user could be locked out of the house. When the lock becomes locked or
unlocked, the date, time and state it’s in get sent to the August servers where the user can see the recent
activity of it. This could be a privacy concern because if the servers get intercepted, a hacker could know when
the door is lock and unlock. The hacker can use this information to know when there’s anybody in the house. If
something like this happened, August could be responsible for not securing the user’s data as much as they
should’ve.

Conclusion
Overall, I think that the lock is a good option for people that don’t like keys because instead of having loads of
keys and having to look through them all to open the door, they can get close to the door with their phone and
it’ll unlock by itself. Also, the lock is useful to households that have a lot of people living in the same house
because instead of giving out loads of keys or hiding them by the door, they can give digital keys to people and
unlock the door with their phones. However, I think there’s a security concern because if there’s a flaw in the
code for the lock, anybody could get into people’s houses and steal from them. Finally, it includes a feature
that automatically locks the door by itself. This is a very handy feature because if they have gone out and
unknowingly left the door unlocked, it will lock by itself after an amount of time.

BITDEFENDER BOX
Purpose
The purpose of the Bitdefender BOX is to make sure that all the devices that are
connected to the Wi-Fi are safe. It protects all devices, even devices that can’t run anti-
malware software.

Application
It can be used for personal use or an industrial environment with a lot of internet
connected devices because businesses don’t want confidential information to be viewed
by people that have malicious intent.
