Bridget Jones’s Diary
Connection between the title and the book
The title of the book Bridget Jones's diary is, of course, very easy to explain. It is about Bridget Jones
and it is her diary you read.
Main Characters
Bridget Jones is the main character in the book. She is a woman of 30 years old, who is afraid that
she will always be single. She is a bit sturdy and because of that she is obsessed with her weight and
everything she eats and drinks, as well as what she smokes. She is a bit crazy and weird, but a person
with quite a few friends.
Mark Darcy, he is a lawyer and has ‘masses of money’. Bridget is matched with him by her mother
and a friend of her mother. At first Bridget thinks he's a boring guy, but later on she sees something
in him. I think he is a cutie pie. ‘I like you, very much… No I like you very much, just as you are.’.
Character Development
“I have finally realized the secret of happiness with men, and it is with deep regret, rage and an
overwhelming sense of defeat that I have to put it in the words of an adulteress, criminal’s
accomplice and G-list celebrity: ‘Don’t say “what”, say “pardon”, darling, and do as your mother tells
you.” Her taste of men is better in the end, because she is with Mark instead of Daniel. I love how
she didn’t like him at all in the beginning, but she’s grown to love him in the end.
The most important emotional conflict
At one point, friends of her parents were throwing a party. Bridget goes there as a (playboy) rabbit.
When she arrives there, the theme seems to have been cancelled and she is one of the few people
who had dressed up. At this party she runs into Mark again and they start a conversation that
doesn't end pleasantly.
When Bridget comes back from this party she goes to Daniel and she finds out that he has someone
else he wants to marry.
Bridget goes looking for a new job and she resigns from Daniel. She goes to a television station to
work as a reporter. Her first broadcast immediately makes her famous, because she has to slip off a
fire brigade bar.
Ending
I am satisfied with the outcome. The book has a closed ending, which I am happy about, because I
don't like to wonder how the story would end with open endings. It's a happy ending and I'm glad
about that, because Bridget deserves it after a year of misfortune and stress.
Setting
The story is set around 1995, which means that it takes place in our time. It starts on 1 January and
ends in December. So the story describes exactly one year of Bridget's life.
The location where it takes place is in London, England, where Bridget lives. She also works here and
has almost all her friends. It also takes place at her parents' home and some other places. The place
doesn't really matter, only the fact that she is a real English person and that it takes place in England
is important.
