(2001) 2. Question 2 2.1. The state of the literature 2.1.1. Anstey, M. (2013). Marikana – and the push for a new South African Pact. South African Journal of Labour Relations, 37(2), 133-145. This article discusses the violent happenings and confrontation that took place at Marikana in 2012 in the context of South Africa’s transitional history. It has a focus on whether it represented a broader crisis in the social pact that came about during the transitional years leading up to the country's first democratic elections in 1994. During the 1990s, a wave of transitions leading to democracy swept through South Africa, South America and Southern Europe, and although these transitions were threatened by revolutionary overthrows, the flight of capital as well as coups, these processes were normally stabilised by employing pacts which were negotiated at military, political and socioeconomic levels. On each of these levels, negotiations may have been difficult, but they were a reflection of the choices made by the different parties, even though they did not always see eye-to-eye, to create a shared vision for a future society. They then used their joint forces for it to come to light. 2.1.2. McGuire, D. (2014). Analysing union power, opportunity and strategic capability: global and local union struggles against the general agreement on trade in services (GATS). Global Labour Journal, 5(1), 45-67. This article discussed the framework for recognising opportunities, and evaluating the amount of power and capacity needed for a union or unions to create strategic campaigns which would allow for the confrontation of neoliberal policies and practices. An analysis conducted of union HRIOP86: WORKING WITH LITERATURE 4 protests against the General Agreement on Trade in Service (GATS) showed that opportunities to oppose and test the system at the time did in fact exist, but that these opportunities would have to be recognised and strategically executed in a way that would allow for the widespread of solidarity and contestation. 2.1.3. Sharma, S., Bottom, W.P., & Elfenbein, H.A., (2013). On the role of personality, cognitive ability, and emotional intelligence in predicting negotiation outcomes: a meta-analysis. Organizational Psychology Review, 3(4), 293-336. This article discusses the longstanding consensus found among researchers that individual differences have a limited role in predicting negotiation outcomes however, this consensus originated from an earlier narrative review which was based on limited data. A meta-analysis of negotiation studies found that there was an important role for the broad range of individual difference variables when testing the validity of the previously mentioned consensus. Emotional intelligence, cognitive ability as well as a variety of other personality traits signified predictive validity over multiple outcome measures. Applicable criteria for both the negotiator and their counterpart included; psychological subjective value, individual economic value as well as joint economic value.
