Week 7 Assignment: Case Study – Space Race
What did it mean for the U.S. and USSR during the Cold War?
We are just small pieces in a large universe; the earth may feel colossal, but it is
extremely small compared to the rest of the system. We humans have learned a lot about the
mysteries of space. However, there is much more room for investigation. It is difficult to imagine
reality when we have practically no information about what is happening there. The space race
has become one of the most significant crossroads in the history of mankind, as this period
aroused a sense of patriotism in the United States and the Soviet Union, expanded our
understanding of space and served as an impetus for the rapid advancement of innovation.
(Calhane, 2017). The Space Race was originally a problem between the Cold War, the US and
the former Soviet Union, due to the predominance in space research that took place somewhere
between 1955 and 1975 shortly after World War II, when rockets began to turn into "a different
style of combat, when atomic bombs could spread rapidly around the world" (Smithsonian
National Museum of Aviation and Cosmonautics). Missiles turned into a possible solution for
long-range weapons, which triggered its initial advancement (Culhane, 2017). Subsequently, the
initial periods of the Space Race began when the two countries began to create rockets, as
methods of struggle, but for exploring the room. There were no real wars during the Cold War,
but a time of geopolitical pressure between the two countries. In fact, it was a quiet
“manifestation of solidarity” when both sides alternated to see who prevailed, which in this
situation indicated Danga 2 to their predominance in space (Culhane, 2017). After sending the
Soviet satellite, the United States should have reacted.
Is the space program still relevant?
