This EPQ achieved an A* and was on creating a series of artwork inspired by Rene Magritte exploring rebellion within the main issues faced in 2020. This is an example of a rationale that is detailed enough to achieve high marks. It meets all of the requirements for the OCR EPQ specification.

Rationale

I have based my project around the main issues that 2020 faced, incorporating the idea of
rebellion into three final paintings inspired by the work of Rene Magritte.

I really love art, especially surrealism but I have never had the chance to take it as a subject
at either A level or GCSE level as there have always been other more important subjects to
take. So I left art as a hobby. The EPQ is a great way of expressing my passion for art and
finding out more about surrealism. At first I was going to look at a range of surrealist artists
but after researching a couple lightly I found that I was inspired more so by Magritte than any
of the others. I have never painted onto a canvas or displayed any of my work before so this
will be a new skill and a new experience for me. I would also like to develop my skills in
researching and leading my own project without the help of others. This will prepare me for
University which I intend to go to after my A levels.

Due to the issues that Covid-19 has brought on the world, finding books in libraries and
bookshops is hard as they are closed so using them as sources may be tricky. However, as
some of my project is about current events or at least events that happened recently there
will be resources like magazines and news articles that will help me a great deal. Also, I will
use the internet for some of my research mainly for the research about Rene Magritte. TED
Talks are also a helpful tool which I shall use in my EPQ. Primary research is mainly
redundant in my project as it’s not really about other people’s opinions as art is very much
about the artists perspective, or at least it was for Magritte.

I will be making three paintings on canvases using the style of Magritte. They will be
addressing the important issues from 2020 like Coronavirus and Black Lives Matter. The
purpose of my project is to show rebellion against these issues and how our actions have
consequences.
